Evaluation of Lemon Germplasm at Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of twenty one lemon germplasm was studied at the Fruit Reaserch Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during 2011-2012. Germplasm showed wide range of variability in respect of leaf length, leaf breadth and north-south and east-west canopy spreading. Plant height varied from106.0cm in CL-Joy 031 to 302cm in CL-Joy 007. The maximum base girth (28.7 cm) and number of branches per plant (4.0) was found in CL-Joy 009 and the minimum in CL-Joy 019 (11.4 cm and 1.0, respectively). The largest leaf area (63.8 cm²) was measured in CL-Joy 015 and tiny area (18.0 cm²) in CL-Joy 009. Among the twenty one germplasm only eight germplasm produced fruits during 2011-12. Among them maximum number of fruit (18.8/plant) was found in CL-Joy 007 followed by BARI Lebu-1 (11.0/plant) and minimum fruits (1.6/plant) were obtained in CL-Joy 010.

Objectives:

To study the performance of lemon germplasm at HRC, BARI, Gazipur.
Evaluate, characterized and documented the selected lemon germplasm.
To developed more lemon variety having higher yield and good quality.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during July 2011 to June 2012. Eighteen germplasm of lemon viz. CL-Joy 003, CL-Joy 007, CL-Joy 009, CL-Joy 010, CL-Joy 013, CL-Joy 014, CL-Joy 015, CL-Joy 016, CL-Joy 019, CL-Joy 021, CL-Joy 022, CL-Joy 023, CL-Joy 024, CL-Joy 026, CL-Joy 027, CL-Joy 028, CL-Joy 031, CL-Joy 090 were used in this experiment, three BARI released varieties namely BARI Lebu-1, BARI Lebu-2 and BARI Lebu-3 were used as check. One year old saplings were collected and planted on 20 October 2009 in the field at a spacing of 3 x 3m. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 5 replications. All of the accessions were fertilized with 100g Urea, 100g TSP, 100g MP in addition 10-12 kg well decomposed cowdung on first week of October 2011 and mid April 2012. Flood irrigation was given after fertilization. Three flood irrigations were provided on mid November, January and February. Weeding was done 10 to12 days after each irrigation. Insecticide (Cypermethrin) was sprayed twice at 7 days interval on last week of February and mid May for controlling the leaf eating caterpillar. Undesired branches were pruned off on 10 December 2011. Leaf area was estimated following the method of Saidha and Rao (1985). Leaf area Y = K.X, where K is constant (0.737) and X = the length of leaf × the breadth of leaf. Data on base girth, plant height, number of branch per plant, north south and east-west spreading were recorded on 24 May 2012 and analyzed statically.

Achievement/Findings:

The growth of all germplasm was quite satisfactory and only eight germplasm bears fruit and others are in vegetative stage among the fruit bearing germplasm CL-Joy 007 and BARI Lebu-1 performed better.
