In Situ Evaluation of Mandarin Germplasm at Tangail

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eight mandarin germplasm were evaluated during July 2011 to June 2012 in the farmers field of Sakhipur, Tangail. Wide variations among the existing germplasm were recorded in respect of studied parameters. The plant height and base girth ranged from 3.10 m to 5.40 m and 28 cm to 42 cm, respectively. Number of branches/plant varied from 4.62 (line-03) to 7.12 (line-01). Maximum fruit (255.0) was harvested in line-07 followed by line-04 (140.0) and minimum (70.0) in line-03. The heaviest fruit (150g) was obtained in line-05 and the lowest (95.0g) in line-04. Rind weight found maximum (150.0 g) in line-05 and minimum (22.5 g) in line-04. Number of segment and seed per fruit varied from 9 (line-02, 03 and 07) to11 (line-04) and 10 (line-07) to 24 (line-01), respectively. Edible portion was found maximum (73%) in line-01, line-04 and line-05. The TSS content was the highest (12.0%) in line-02, line-03, line-06, line-07 and line-08. All of the germplasm produce oblong shaped fruit. Maximum germplasm gave collared with necked fruit base, easy to very easy pilling quality, and clavet shaped seed. Only two lines (line-01 and line-04) produced concave collared fruit base, less juicy fruit and ovoid shaped seed.

Objectives:

To study the performance of mandarin germplasm at farmers field of Sakhipur, Tangail.
To evaluate, characterized and documented the selected mandarin germplasm.
To collect suitable mandarin germplasm for collection and evaluation.

Methodology:

The data was collected from the established mandarin orchard of Sakhipur, Tangail during July 2011 to June 2012. In this orchard eight germplasm of mandarin were planted on 12 June 2000 in a spacing of 4 x 4 m². The plants were fertilized with 200 g Urea, 200 g TSP, 200 g MP in addition 10-12 kg well decomposed cowdung on first week of May and mid October 2011. Four flood irrigations were performed on November, December, January and February in addition irrigation was done followed by fertilization. Insecticide Aktara and Admire was sprayed three times at 15 days interval from 01 February for controlling the aphid. Data on base girth, plant height, number of branch per plant, canopy spreading, number of fruit/plant, fruit weight (g), prind weight (g), number of segment/fruit, number of seed/fruit, percent edible portion (%), TSS (%), fruit shape pilling quality, fruit base, fruit axis, juicyness and seed shape were recorded following IBPGR descriptor and analyzed statically.

Achievement/Findings:

Depending on qualitative and quantitative fruit characters Line-02, Line-03, Line-05 and Line-07 were found promising and might be collected for conservation and evaluation in the research station.
