Evaluation of Cowa (garcinia Cowa) Germplasms in the Hilly Region of Ramgarh, Khagrachari

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the HTARS, Ramgarh, Khagrachari during 2011-2012. A wide range of variation was observed in growth, yield and quality characteristics. The base girth of plant ranged from 74 cm (GC Ram-005) to 88.0 cm (GC Ram-010). The tallest plant was observed in GC Ram-005 (20.50 m) and the shortest in GC Ram-011 (16.40 m). The tree volume was found maximum in GC Ram-007 (647.82 m³), while minimum in GC Ram-010(184.83 m³). Number of fruits/plant was the highest in GC Ram-007 (1092), followed by GC Ram-011 (760) ant the lowest in GC Ram-010 (70). The heaviest fruit was recorded in GC Ram-007 (60.60 g), while the lightest in GC Ram-011 (23.00 g). Maximum yield/plant was obtained from GC Ram-007 (66.18 kg) and it was the lowest in GC Ram-010 (2.66 kg). The highest TSS was recorded in GC Ram-007(15.80%) followed by GC Ram-010 (15.58%) and GC Ram-011 (15.24%). Number of segments/fruit was maximum in GC Ram-007 (7), while the lowest (4) in GC Ram-010 and GC Ram-010. Fruits of GC Ram-007 were deep yellow in colour and light sour with very good in taste.

Objectives:

To study the performance of cowa germplasm at hilly region
To evaluate, characterized and documented the cowa germplasm.
To developed cowa variety having higher yield and good quality.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Hill Tracts Agricultural Research station, Ramgarh, Khagrachari during 2011-2012. Among 11 germplasms, 4 lines were selected that included in this study viz. GC Ram-005, GC Ram-007, GC Ram-010 and GC Ram-011 to evaluate the superior cowa lines. A single tree of each germplasm constituted a unit plot. Each plant was fertilized with 10 kg cowdung, 1000 g urea, 900 g TSP, 500 g MoP, 400 g gypsum, 50 g zinc sulphate and 20 g Borax in two splits in circular trench (60 cm broad, 30 cm deep) 1 m away from the trunk. First split was applied at the end of September and second after fruit setting. No plant protection was taken as there was no insect pest visible during the study period. Ten fruits from each plant were randomly selected for evaluation. Fully mature fruit were harvested from the plant and data on different parameters were recorded after ripening of the fruits and the mean data were calculated. The recorded data on different parameters were statistically analyzed using MSTAT-C programme and DMRT was performed for interpretation of results (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Number of fruits/plant, heaviest fruits and yield per plant was found the highest in GC Ram-007. The germplasm also performed better in respect of TSS content of fruits, number of segments per fruit, skin colour, flesh colour, and taste, and might be selected for recommended as a variety.
