Design and Performance Study of a Solar Fruits and Vegetables Dryer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments conducted on the performance study of a solar chimney dryer revealed that maximum temperature insides the dryer was attained in October and lowest in June 1995. The drying tests were run on Capsicum frnitescens (pepper) and Solanum tuberosum (potato) and results indicated that the drying rate was significantly higher than that of simple dryer and open drying under sun. Moreover the dried products remained free from dust and contamination . With the use of this dryer the drying time was also considerably reduced.

Objectives:

To design and develop a simple. inexpensive solar dryer for quick and controlled drying of fruits and vegetables.

Methodology:

The solar chimney dryer developed for drying fruits and vegetables consists of a wooden frame (100 x 50 x 120) cm³, a transparent top glass sheet having a drying chamber, four perforated drawers, each (95 x 40 x 20) cm³ made of ms sheet (18 gauze) placed in drying chamber through the opening, one chimney dia, 7.6 cm, length 76 cm. with an air regulated valve, a wooden thin sheet having twelve holes attached to the bottom of the dryer to ensure the good flow of air . The transparent top of the dryer is slanting and consists of two glass sheets kept about 3/4 inch apart to reduce back radiation of heat. Angle of transparent top is 23 degree with the base of the dryers about equal to the latitude of place where the dryer is used.
