Effect of Bradyrhizobial Strains and Nitrogenous Fertilizer on Groundnut Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted with seven treatments such as five inocula of different bradyrhizobial strains, urea @ 50 kg N/ha and control. DG-1 variety of groundnut was used as test crop. Inoculation showed positi ve response even when the native bradyrhizobial population was around 2.3 x 10⁴viable cells/g of soil. Beneficial effect of inoculation was recorded on dry shoot, pod and grain yield of the crop. Urea (50 kg N ha^-1 ) treatment also showed better result compared to uninoculated control. The lowest grain yield (6.96 g/plant) was recorded in the control plot . Treatment T7 (50 kg N ha^{- I}) gave 21 .98% higher grain yield than the control treatment but 30.03 % less yield than the T2 treatment. The treatment T2 (BINA-GN- 169) performed the best i n almost all the parameters. .

Objectives:

1. To evaluate the effect of seed inoculation with different bradyrhizobial inoculants and chemical fertilizer i.e. urea on the growth, nodulation and yield of groundnut.

Methodology:

Field trial was carried out at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) during Rabi season of 1998-99 with different strains of bradyrhizobia and urea fertilizer on groundnut. The variety DG-1 was used as test crop. Representative soil samples were taken from the depth of 0-15 cm. For the most probable number (MPN) count, soil samples were preserved at 4°C in a polythelene bag until use. Most probable number (MPN) count of groundnut bradyrhizobial cells were determined by dilution technique as described by Baruah and Barthakur (1997) and calculated the population using Brockwell Table. The following treatments were used: T₁ = control, T₂ = BINA-GN-169, T₃ = BINA GN-1000, T₄ = BINA-GN-1371, T₅ = BINA-GN-NC-92, T₆ = BINA-GN-Mix, T₇ = 50 kg N/ha . The trial was laid out in Randomized Block Design (RBD) using three replications. Basal application of P₂0₅ and K₂0 were made @ 60 and 30 kg ha^{- I} , respectively. The source of fertilizers was used as TSP and MP. Seeds were treated with respective inoculants (105 - 106 viable cells I seed) and sown in the afternoon. During data collection at 50% flowering and podding stage, five representative plant samples from each plot were uprooted with much care to record on plant height, plant weight, nodule number and nodule weight. Finally, the crop was harvested at full maturity with randomly taken ten plants/plot. Analysis of variance of different characters of the crop was made and their mean difference was adjusted by Duncans new multiple range test.
