Genetic Research in Maize for Grain and Fodder - Ii

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eleven experiments were conducted during '990-91 under the project. "Coordinated Genetic Research for Crop Improvement (Maize Section)". Six F7 one F6 and five F4, populations significantly out yielded the check varieties Barnali and Shuvra. Out of them, the F6 population also produced significantly more biomass than the check varieties and was proposed for exploitation of gene action both for grain and fodder. Seven eighth generation selfed lilies were evaluated and selfed to fix genetically important characters. A study with 30 maize genotypes indicated that genetic parameters were affected by the genotype X environment interaction. Here; selection for ear height seemed to be most effective. Six varieties introduced from CIMMYT, Mexico significantly out yielded the check varieties. Barnali and Shuvra, out of which one produced significantly more biomass than the checks. Crossing was made among 15 maize genotypes. One hundred and sixty nine maize genotypes were maintained to use in future breeding programme.

Objectives:

To conduct basic and applied researches related to maize genetics and breeding.

Methodology:

During 1990-91, the following experiments were conducted: Experiment nos. 1, 2 and 3. Evaluation of the F4, F5, F6, F7 and F8 populations: Two F8 and 22 F7 populations obtained from varietal crosses were evaluated in comparison with the check varieties Barnali and Shuvra in experiment no. 1. Seeds of aII genotypes were sown on 12. 11.90 in single row plots of 5m long giving 75 and 25cm spacings between and within rows, respectively. Randomized block design with three replications was followed to raise the crop. Fertilizers app- lied were urea, triple super phosphate (T. S. P.) and muriate of potash (M. P) @ 220, 110 and 50 kg ha^-1, respectively. Besides these, cowdung @' 5t ha^-1 was also applied before the final land preparation. One third of urea and whole of T. S. P. and M P. were applied at the time of final land preparation. The rest of urea was app- lied in two slits, 30 and 60 days after sowing, respectively. Data were re- corded on grain yield ( t ha^-1), days to pollen shedding, days to silk, plant height (crn ), ear height (cm), biomass (t ha^-1) and harvest index. Data on plant height and ear height were taken from ten random plants in each plot and the rest of the data were recorded on the basis of whole plot. Mean data were subjected to analysis of variance (Cochran and Cox, 1960 ) and critical difference (C. D.) was calculated following Panse and Sukhatme (1978). In experiment no. 2, 13 F6 populations and in experiment no. 3, 24 F4 and two F5 populations obtained from varietal crosses were evaluated following the same procedure as was done in experiment no. 1. Experiment no. 4. Study with eighth generation selfed (S8) lines of maize. Seven eighth generation selfed (S8) lines and the two check varieties Barnali and Shuvra were grown following the same procedure as was followed in the previous experiment. Data collection and analysis were also same as those followed in experiment no. 1. Besides these, desirable plants in each plot were selfed for fixation of genetically important characters. Experiment no. 5. Impact of genotype-environmental interaction on the determination of genetic parameters. Thirty maize genotypes were grown in five dates of sowing (15. 11. 90, 30. 11. 90, 15. 12. 90, 30. 12. 90 and 14. 1.91 ) following procedures Similar to those of previous experiment.
