Effect of Poultry Manure on Different Forms of Phosphorus in Some Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A laboratory experiment was carried out from January to October, 2004 m the Department of Soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh with soil samples from six different soil series i.e. Birgonj (Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain), Tejgaon (Madhupur Tract), Dumuria (Ganges Tidal Flood Plain), Sonatola (Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain), Gangachara (Tista Flood Plain) and Sara (Active Ganges Flood Plain) to get an understanding on the influence of organic matter on different forms of phosphorus. Surface soil samples (0-15 em) were collected from the selected series in January, 2004. They were dried in air, ground and sieved through a 20-mesh sieve and kept in plastic pots. Five hundred gram of each soil was weighed and mixed properly with 0, 20, 40 and 60 g of poultry manure maintaining 0%, 4%, 8% and 12% of organic matter. They were kept in plastic pots for 3 months at field capacity for further decomposition. The soils were extracted with 1M NH4 Cl, 0.5M NF, 0.11 NaOH, 0.5NH2S04 , 0.3M Na-Citrate-dithionite + 1M NaHC03, 30% H202 and 0.5 N acid-NF for Al-P, Fe-P, Ca-P, occluded Fe-P, occluded Al-P, mineral P and organic P respectively. Results indicated that the concentration of Fe-P, Al-P, Ca-P, organic P and mineral P increased but occluded Al-P and occluded Fe-P decreased with increasing level of added organic matter upto 12%. The rate of increase was the highest in case of Al-P. It was followed by mineral P and then Ca-P. The increase in Fe-P due to poultry manure was low although its concentration was the highest among the forms studied.

Objectives:

1. The present study was undertaken with a view to obtain a better understanding about the influence of organic matter on different forms of phosphorus.

Methodology:

Representative soil samples from six different soil series of six different Agro Ecological Zones were used in this study. The soil series were - Birgonj (Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain), Tejgaon (Madhupur Tract), Dumuria (Ganges Tidal Flood Plain), onatola (Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain), Gangachara (Tista Flood Plain) and ara (Active Ganges Flood Plain). Soil samples at a depth of 0-15 cm were collected from six different places of each sites. The collected samples were air dried, ground and sieved (2-1 mm sieve). Weeds, stables, plant roots etc were removed from the soil before grinding. About 1000 g of each ground soil sample was preserved in plastic pot with proper labeling for chemical and fractionation studies. Soil samples were analyzed for texture, pH , organic matter, Fc-P, Ca-P, Al-P, Occluded Fe- P, Occluded Al-P, Organic-P and Mineral-P.

Achievement/Findings:
