Use of Chemicals in Aquaculture Activities in Mymensingh Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In order to investigate current status of chemicals used in various aquaculture activities in Mymensingh area, a questionnaire survey was conducted with carp. pangas and prawn farmers, hatchery owners and chemical sellers from January to September 2004. Each group consisted of 25 respondents The study focused on five upazilla namely Mymensingh sadar, Trishal, Valuka, Gouripur and Fulpur. All interviewed farmers were male with an average family size of 5.3 and an average experience of fish farming of four years. Maximum farmers were within the age group of 25-35 years. The stud y showed that fish farmers used a range of chemicals in their various aquaculture activities. Comm only used chemicals found in the present study were lime, salt, urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), potassium permanganate, vitamins, antibiotics (mainly oxytetracycline and chlorotetracycline), rotenone, phostoxm, sumithion, melathion and some hormones. Health management and disease treatment were the major activities where farmers were seen to use a lot of chemicals. Pangas farmers used more chemicals than carp and prawn farmers. The study identified some diseases and conditions like epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS), tail and fin rot, dropsy, agrulosis, nutritional disease, red and white spot for carp and anal protrusion, red spot, tail and tin rot disease for pangas. Prawn farmers and hatchery owners reported about only few diseases. This study demonstrated that most of the farmers used chemicals and antibiotics indiscriminately without knowing their mode of action, doses and appropriate procedures of application. Antibiotics were seen to use a lot mostly by the pangas farmers. The study also highlighted the names and approximate price of aquaculture chemicals available with the chemical sellers in Mymensingh area.

Objectives:

1. To identify types of chemical s used in aquaculture activities in Mymensingh area, 2. To know the purpose, dose and methods of application of use of such chemicals; and 3. To identify problems of the use of chemicals.

Methodology:

Data was collected through questionnaire interview. The questionnaire was composed of both closed and open form of question. A set of preliminary questionnaire was prepared. This was field tested with a few target people of each representative group. ln this pilot survey much attention was given to any new information, which was not designed to ask but was important and informative towards the objectives. Thus necessary modifications were made based on the feedback and the final questionnaire was prepared on the basis of pilot survey. Separate set of questionnaire was prepared for each group. For the interview, simple random sampling method was followed. The data was analyzed using tabular and descriptive statistical techniques. The summary tables were prepared in accordance to the objective of the study. The technique of analysis included the classification of tables into meaningful result by arithmetic mean, percentage and ratios.

Achievement/Findings:
