Influence of Mulch and Fertilizers on the Yield of Turmeric in Hills

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Green leaf mulch performed well giving the highest yield of 24.16 t/ha. On the other hand, application of N₁₂₀P₃₉K₁₀₀ kg/ha gave the highest yield of 23.33 t/ha. In case of combined effect, the most satisfactory yield of 28.17 t/ha was recorded from the treatment combination of green leaf mulch with fertilizer dose N₁₂₀P₃₉ K ₁₀₀ kg/ha. The highest net return (Tk. 102342) and benefit cost ratio (1.83) were achieved in the same treatment combination.

Objectives:

To find the influence of mulch material and fertilizers on the production of turmeric in the hilly areas of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at Khagrachari (AEZ 29) during 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 in the plain lands on the hill top. The two factors experiment was laid out in a RCBD with three replications. The experiment consisted of two factors - mulch materials and fertilizers. There were four types of mulch materials viz., control/on mulch (M₀), sun grass (lmperata cylindrica) (M₁), green leaves (Mikania lata - Mikania scandens Willd.). (M₂) and leaf litters (M₃) and four levels of fertilizer doses viz., control/N₀P₅₂K₀ kg/ha (F₀), N₉₀P₂₆K₇₅ kg/ha (F₁ ), N₁₂₀P₃₉K ₁₀₀kg/ha (F₂), and N₁₂₀P₅₂ K ₁₂₅ k/ha (F₃). The unit plot size was 6 m x 3 m. The seed rhizomes of Dimla variety were planted on 26 March in both the years maintaining a spacing of 50 cm x 25 cm. Cowdung @ 1000 kg/ha was applied in each plot. The entire quantities of cowdung, TSP and half of the MP were applied during final land preparation The crop was harvested on 28 December in both the years. Data on different growth parameters, yield components and yield were recorded and analyzed. The mean differences were separated by LSD method (Gomez and Gomez 1993) for interpretation of the results. The cost of production was analyzed in order to find out the most profitable fertilizer dose and suitable mulch materials for turmeric production in the hilly areas.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest gross and net return (Tk. 225360 and 102342/ha, respectively) were obtained from the combination of green leaves and medium dose of fertilizers (N₁₂₀ P₃₉K ₁₀₀kg/ha) . The highest benefit cost ratio (BCR) ( 1.83) was also obtained by the same treatment. The nearest gross return (Tk. 206560) and BCR (1.65) were obtained in the combination of green leaves and the fertilizers (F₃). So, the study denotes that the combined use of green leaves as mulch material and medium dose of fertilizer (N₁₂₀P₃₉K ₁₀₀ kg/ha) are effective means for increasing turmeric yield in flat and mild slope in the hills of Bangladesh.
