Growth and Yield Performance of Fifteen Soybean Genotypes in Patuakhali Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To explore the possibility of introducing soybean cultivation in the southern districts of Bangladesh study was undertaken to see the growth and yield performances of fifteen soybean genotypes in Patuakhali area. The genotypes showed sigmoid pattern of drymatter (DM) production. The higher the DM production at early stages of growth, the earlier were the genotypes in terms of maturity. Again the higher the number of nodules per plant in genotypes, the higher was the yield. Eight genotypes namely, G-2261, TGX-1497-ID, TGX-1456-3E, MTO-459, Ranson, Beakungkong. G-2 and Malabor gave significantly higher seed yields than the released variety, shohag which yielded 1648 kg/ha.

Objectives:

To evaluate the growth and yield performances of fifteen genotypes under the agro-ecological conditions of Patuakhali.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the Patuakhali Agricultural College Farm during December 1993 through April 1994. The soil is a medium highland belonging to non-saline Ganges Tidal Floodplain in a randomized complete block design with three replications having unit plot size of 4m x I .2m. Fourteen exotic genotypes and released cultivar, shohag were tested. Prior to sowing, seeds were treated with soybean inoculum (Rhizobium japonicunu. A blanket rate of fertilizer @ 60 kg P₂0, 60 kg K₂0 and 20 kg S per ha in the form of TSP, MP and gypsum, respectively were applied during land preparation. Seeds were sown on 21 December at a rate of 80 kg/ha in rows 30 cm apart. Upon emergence the seedlings were thinned to a density of 20 plants per linear meter. The crop was weeded on 10.30 and 50 days after sowing (DAS). The previous crop was transplanted aman rice. The average maximum and minimum temperatures of the site were 27°C and 24°C respectively with a total rainfall of 330 mm during the study period Five plants from each plot were carefully dug out on 30, 50, 70 and 90 DAS and the soils were removed. Nodules which looked very pink after dissecting with a sharp razor blade were considered to be effective and were recorded. The shoots were cut off at the soil level and dried to a constant weight at 95°C for 24 hours in an oven. The final harvesting was done between 85 and 125 DAS depending on the maturity of different genotypes. Data on yield attributes were recorded from 10 random sampled plants from each plot. Grain yield was recorded on the whole plot basis. The data were analysed statistically and the mean differences were adjudged by the least significant difference, LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest seed yield of 2035 kg/ha was produced by G-2261, followed by TGX-1497-ID (1823 kg/ha), TGX -1456-2E (1819 kg/ha), MTD-459 (1776 kg/ha), Ranson (1774 kg/ha) and Beakungkong (1746 kg/ha). On an average these genotypes produced 23.5% higher seed yield over the released cultivar, shohag (1648 kg/ha). Form the above results it appears that the genotypes G-226 I , TGX-1497-ID, TGX-1456-2E MTD-459, Ranson, Beakungkong, G-2 and shohag gave satisfactory yields in Patuakhali region.
