Varietal Susceptibility of Rice to the Infestation of Rice Weevil,sitophilu S Oryzae(l.)(coleoptera : Curculionidae)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Susceptibility of seven varieties of rice. locally known as Kalijira, Katari bhog , Pajam, Pari za. Nizersail. Minicate and Latisail to the infestation of rice weevil. Sitophilus oryzae (L.) was studied under the laboratory conditions at the room temperature (24.6 - 32.2° C) and 7 l.5 ± 2.5% relative humidity. Count of the emerging adults showed that the lowest number of weevils was produced on Kalijira and highest on Nizersail. Though none of the rice varieties was found to be completely immune to the attack of the rice weevil, i t was possible to arrange the varieties according to their degree of susceptibility to the pest. The most susceptible varieties were Nizersail, Minicate and Latisail and the least susceptible varieties were Kalijira, Pajam and Katari bhog, the variety Pariza filled in between the t wo extremes.

Objectives:

The present work was undertaken with the aim of assessing the relative susceptibility of seven varieties of rice to the infestation of the rice weevil.

Methodology:

Experiments on the susceptibility of rice varieties to the infestation of rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) were conducted in the laboratory of the Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka. Seven varieties of husked rice grains (Kalijira, Katari bhog, Pajam, Pariza, Minicate, Nizersail and Latisail) were collected from local rice stores of Dhaka city. Each of the varieties was assorted to remove the broken or damaged rice grains. Any sort of extraneous materials were also removed to get only fresh and full rice grains as test samples. The grains were disinfested by keeping in a deep-freeze for two weeks and were then spread on papers at room temperature for 24 hours to bring them to normal temperature. The moisture content of different varieties varied between 10.61 and 12.5 l %. Data obtained from the experiments were statistically analyzed . Average or mean population number of the weevils developed on the seven varieties of rice on indicated weeks was tabulated . For comparing the susceptibility of the rice varieties to S. oryzae, one-way analysis of variance was performed by using SPSS. To find out any significant difference among all pairs of the means, DMRT was utilized.

The common impression that the aromatic fine varieties of rice are more susceptible to insect attack was found to be wrong in this experiment as Kalijira, an aromatic fine rice variety (Polao rice) proved to be most resistant to the infestation of the rice weevil. Though, none of the rice varieties was found completely immune to the attack of S. oryzae, it was possible to arrange the varieties according to their degree of susceptibility to the pest. The most susceptible varieties were Nizersail, Minicate and Latisail and the least susceptible varieties were Kalijira, Pajam and Katari bhog. while the variety Pariza fitted in between the two extremes.Varietal susceptibility of various cereal grains to insects is a complex phenomenon. Least susceptible varieties may offer resistance to insect attack primarily due to certain characters leading to antibiosis, which is probably due to chemical or partly to physical nature of the grains. So, further studies are needed to determine the causes of susceptibility of the grain varieties to insects.
