Effect of Zinc and Iron on the Performance of Hyv Rice in Calcareous Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments were conducted at BRRI, Gazipur and BRRI, Rajshahi farm under upland condition with rice (BR 20) cultivar revealed that application of Zn at the rate of 10 kg/ ha increased both dry matter production and grain yield. Application of iron in green house experiment depressed plant growth drastically. Zinc and iron content of plant parts was increased with the application of respective Zn and Fe fertilize individually, but when they were applied in combination their content was decreased showing antagonistic character between these two elements. Their uptake was also affected when they were applied together both in green house and field experiments.

Objectives:

To ascertain Zn rates under different Fe levels and also to evaluate the Zn and Fe interaction in calcarious soils.

Methodology:

Experiments were conducted in green house at Joydebpur and Rajshahi farm of BRRI. Before setting up experiments soils samples were collected from the field and analyzed following the standard methodologies . Soil sample for green house experiment was collected in bulk from Regional Station, Rajshahi and processed in the usual manner. Five hundred gram of air-dried and processed soil was taken in one litter plastic pot. The treatments consisted of four levels of Zn at the rate of 0, 10, 100 and 200 kg/ha and three levels of Fe at the rate of 0, 40 and 80 kg /ha The green house experiment was set up in a complete randomized design with three replications. A blanket dose of 80 kg N /ha as urea 25 kg P/ha as TSP and 35 kg K/ha as MP were applied. The test variety was BR 20. Upland situation was maintained during the cropping period. Deioinzed water was used as and when irrigation was required. The plants were harvested at 40 days after sowing (tillering stage) and dry matter yield was recorded after drying at 70°C. Zinc and iron contents of plant samples were determined by Absorption Spectrophotometer solution of di-acid Atomic in the digestion.A field trial was conducted simultaneously in the same plot from where the soil was collected for green house experiment. The treatments were same as green house study except 200 kg Zn/ha. Zinc and iron were applied 'in randomized complete block design .with three replications. An upland rice variety BR20 (Oryza sativa) was used as a test crop. The plot size was 2m x 2m. Nitrogen, P and K were used as blanket dose at the rate of 80- 25-35 kg/ha. Two third of nitrogen, full dose of P and K together with Zn and Fe were applied at the time of final land preparation.' The rest one third N was applied at 40 days after sowing. The whole plot was harvested at maturity. Straw and grain samples were collected and analyzed for Zn and Fe determination. Grain yield was recorded at 14 percent moisture.
