Effectiveness of Rhizobium Strains and Benefits of Inoculation Compared to Urea-n Application on Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

All the Rhizobium isolates used in the sand culture trial were effective in forming nodules and giving, higher shoot weight of lentil compared to the uninoculated control. But BAU 343, BAU 346, BAU 350 and BAU 351 may selected for evaluation of their effectiveness under field condition because of their letter performance. In the field evaluation experiment it was observed that all the three local R. strains were equally effective as the recommended exotance strain in producing nodule number, weight, shoot weight and grain yield of BM-307 cultivar of lentil. However, the strain TAL 638 gave the highest grain yield of 442 kg per ha (45% increase over uninoc. control which was closely followed by 433 kg per ha (42% increase over uninoc. control) recorded in BAU 303. In the other field experiment, it was noted that inoculation with and effective R. strain was highly beneficial on the growth and yield of lent compared to different rates or urea-N application. Inoculation alone gave the highest nodule number, nodule weight, shoot weight and highest grain yield of 805 kg per ha (69% increase over unfertilized and unioc. treatment). Application of 40 kg N per ha gave only 623 kg per ha of grain yield. The results of the study suggest that the use costly urea fertilizer can be avoided if the crop is inoculated with R. inoculant.

Objectives:

To determine the effectiveness of R. strains to select suitable strain for inoculant production and on evaluation of the benefits of inoculation compared to urea which is widely used as an N fertilizer.

Methodology:

For effectiveness study and for pre-liminary screening of Rhizobium isolates, a sand culture experiment was undertaken in the net house of the department of Soil Science under centrolied conditions using sterilized sand in earthen pots. Rhizobium broth culture was prepared separately for each of the six isolates used in the study in YM media contained in flasks. The R. isolates where desinated as BAU 343, BAU 344. BAU 345, BAU 350, BAU 351 and BAU 352. Then surface sterilized seeds were germinated in a petridish and two seedIings were planted in each pot previously filled with sterile sand. Nutrient solution containing all the essential nutrients except N were supplied properly through a bent glass tube fitted into each pot. After establishment of t he seedlings, only one seedling was allowed to grow in each pot. The seedling in each pot was then inoculated with the broth culture prepared with the desired isolate of R. bacteria. The pots were arranged to follow completely randomized design with four replications. The plants were allowed to grow for 6 weeks when the whole plant in each pot was harvested and records on nodule count, nodule and root weight and shoot weight were taken. In order to study the effectiveness and screening of Rhizobium strains under field condition, a field experiment was conducted with three local strains designated as BAU 303, BAU 343 and BAU 344 and one exotic. To study the benefits of Rhizobium inoculation on lentil another field trial was carried out using five different rates of urea- N in absence and presence of R. inoculation. The rates of urea- N were 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 kg per ha applied in two splits, half dose applied at the time of seed sowing and the rest half dose top dressed after 35 days of sowing of the crop. The local variety of lentil was used as the test crop and the R, strain used for inoculation was TAL 638.
