Inter Cropping of Maize with Cowpea, Khesari, Mung Bean and Groundnut

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Monoculture of maize, cowpea, khesari, mungbean, groundnut and maize intercropped with legumes (cowpea, khesari, mungbean and groundnut) in paired rows were compared in an experiment conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal during rabi 1993-94 and '94-95. During 1993-94, highest maize equivalent yield (6,973 kg/ha) was obtained from maize + ground nut intercropping, but maize + khesari combination gave the highest maize equivalent yield (5,6'15 kg/ha) in 1994-95. Maize + groundnut and maize + Khesari combination also gave the highest net return (Tk. 50,952/ha. and Tk. 40,245/ha.) during 1993-94 and '94-95, respectively. But on an average maize + cowpea and maize + khesari combination gave the highest benefit cost ratio (5.34 and 5.32) and land equivalent ratio (1.35).

Objectives:

To find out suitable crop combination of maize intercropped with mungbean, cowpea, khesari and groundnut.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal during rabi, 1993-94 and 1994-95. The experiment was laid out in randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. The treatments were: Maize sole (75 cm x 25 cm), Cowpea sole (30 cm x 10 cm), Khesari sole (30 cm x 5 cm), Groundnut sole (30 cm x 15 cm), Mungbean sole (30 cm x 5 cm). Maize paired rows (MPR) + 4 rows of cowpea with 30 cm x 10 cm apart, MPR + 4 rows khesari with 30 cm x 5 cm apart, MPR + 4 rows of groundnut with 30 cm x 15 cm apart and MPR + 4 rows of mungbean with 30 cm x 5 cm apart. The unit plot size. was 4.5 x 5 m. The maize plots (both sole and intercrop) were fertilized with 120-60-40 N, P₂0₅and K₂0 kg/ha in the from of urea, triple superphosphate (TSP) and muriate of potash (MP). Full dose of triple super phosphate and muriate of potash and one-third of urea were applied as basal. Remaining urea were side dressed in maize rows in two equal splits at 25 and 60 days after emergence. The crop (Maize sole and intercropped maize) was irrigated at 25 and 60 days after emergence (DAE). Cowpea, khesari, groundnut and mungbean sole plots were fertilized with 20-40-20 NP₂0₅ and K₂0 kg/ha in the form of urea, TSP and MP. All the fertilizers were incorporated into soil before seeding. Crop seeds were sown at the third week of December. Cowpea was harvested at 106, 116 and 130 (three pickings), khesari at 130, mungbean at 70, groundnut at 160 and maize at 145 days after sowing (DAS), respectively. Grain yield and yield component data were collected and analyzed statistically. Total man hours required for different operations were recorded along with cost of different treatments. Cost and benefit analysis was clone for each treatment on a hectare basis taking into account of market values of maize, cowpea, khesari, groundnut and mungbean. Total yield (maize equivalent) of maize-legume inter cropping was worked out by countering the legume crops into yield of maize on the basis of their local market price.

Achievement/Findings:

Highest maize equivalent yield (6,973 kg/ha) was obtained from maize + ground nut intercropping, but maize + khesari combination gave the highest maize equivalent yield (5,615 kg/ha) in 1994-95. Maize + groundnut and maize + Khesari combination also gave the highest net return (Tk. 50,952/ha. and Tk. 40,245/ha.) during 1993-94 and '94-95, respectively. The highest gross return (Tk. 62,757/ha) was obtained from maize in paired rows + ground nut in 1993-94 but in 1994-95 showed higher gross return from maize in paired rows + Khesari (Tk. 50,535/ha). But on an average maize + cowpea and maize + khesari combination gave the highest benefit cost ratio (5.34 and 5.32) and land equivalent ratio (1.35).
