Performance of Some Promising Strains of Soybean and Groundnut Rhizobia Under Field Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two field experiments one with soybean and the other with groundnut were carried out at BAU farm during 1990-91 as part of research activities of the project entitled, "Improvement, Testing and Production of Bacterial Fertilizer" for evaluating the performance of promising strains of rhizobia effective on soybean and groundnut under field conditions. Among the five strains tested with soybean, BAU 107 was found most effective in producing nodule number, nodule weight and grain yield of the crop. The strains BAU 118, BAU 144 and UK 3407 also showed good performance in respect of nodulation and grain yield of soybean although all the strains gave identical grain yield. In case of groundnut, BAU 700 appeared to be the best one among the four promising strains tested in the field trial in giving nodule number, shoot weight and nut yield of the crop. Besides BAU 700, BAU 702 and NC-92 produced significantly higher nut yield but it was NC-92 which gave the highest nodule weight, shoot dry matter and stover yield of groundnut.

Objectives:

To find out the promising strains of soybean and groundnut rhizobia under field condition

Methodology:

For the screening and selection study of soybean rhizobia performance of five strains were evaluated in a field experiment against an uninoculated and unfertilized control treatment using 'Shohag' (Pb-1). a recommended variety of soybean. There were two recommended exotic strains of rhizobia. one TAL 102 obtained from the NifTAL project of the University of Hawaii. USA and the other UK 3407 0 btained from the Rothamsted Expermental Station, U. K. Two promising locally reisolated strains designated as BAU 107 and BAU 118 were used in the study. In addition, another strains used in the study was a reisolate designated as BAU 144 collected from a soybean plot treated with a Canadian inoculant during 1989-90 study. All these strains were tested. against an uninoculated and unfertilized control treatment. In the field trial for screening and selection of groundnut rhizobia, four strains were used of which three were local strains designated as BAU 700 BAU 702 and BAU 709 and one strain designated as NC-92 collected from the Biological Nitrogen Fixation Resource Centre, Thailand. These strains. were tested against an unfertilized control treatment with a recommended variety of groundnut, Dhaka 1. The strain BAU 709 was a new promising strain included in 1990-91 trial while the others were also used in 1989-90 trial. Local peat soil was used as the carrier material for the preparation of bacterial fertilizer with each R. strain f or Herd evaluation. Both the experiments were laid out at BAU farm (Non-calcareous Dark grey Floodplain soiI (Sonatola siIt loam) following Randomized Complete Block Design and having four replications. The plot size for soybean experiment was 5.0 m x 3.6 m and that for groundnut was 4.5 m x 3.6m. Peat based bacterial fertilizers were prepared in the laboratory with different strains of rhizobia and used for seed coating immediate lv before sow- ing of the crops. Gum acacia was used as the sticking agent. The soybean seeds were sown in lines having 40 em row spacing and 5 cm plant spacing while the groundnut seeds were sown having 45 cm row spacing and 15 cm plant spacing.
