Loss of Added Nitrate Nitrogen from Soils as Affected by Organic Matter Treatment

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Loss of added N0₃-N under waterlogged condition from three important Bangladesh soils treated with 2% grass and sucrose showed a maximum and minimum loss of 93% and 23% from the grass treated Ghior and Jhalokathi soil respectively . Loss of N was comparatively more in Ghior sod treated with grass than treated with sucrose. Reverse result was however, observed in Tejgaon and Jhalolchati soils.

Objectives:

TO STUDY THE LOSS OF ADDED NITRATE NITROGEN FROM SOILS AS AFFECTED BY ORGANIC MATTER TREATMENT

Methodology:

Soil samples (0-25cm) were collected from Ghior (G-soil), Tejgaon (T-soil) and Jhalokathi (SA-soil) series soils. The composite soil samples were air dried and passed through a 1 mm sieve for subsequent laboratory analysis. Particle size distribution (Day, 1965), pH (soil: water ratio of 1: 2.5), Organic carbon (Walkley and Black, 1934), Cation exchange capacity (N NH₄0Ac, Jackson, 1973) and total N were determined. CaC0₃ was determined by rapid titration method and that of electrical conductivity by using EC meter. The processed soil sample (5g) were mixed with 2% w /w finely ground Rosy grass (Bakharia roseaniansis C: N 16: 1) and sucrose separately together with potassium nitrate as a basal source of N(500 ppm N). 5 ml water was added to each sample soil to produce a water logged condition in 20 ml test tubes and were incubated at room temperature. Nitrate-N was reduced to ammonium with iron and 2N H₂S0₄and determined after 2, 4 and 8 weeks of incubation following Kjeldahl digestion.

Achievement/Findings:

Loss of nitrate nitrogen was calculated by subtracting the values of total-N obtained after 2, 4 and 8 weeks of incubation from those obtained initially. Results indicated that after 2 weeks of incubation the G-soil showed greater loss of added nitrate than either T -l or SA-soils. About 22% of added nitrate were lost from the control of G-soil where no organic materials were added to stimulate the process of identification. The maximum loss (84%) of N occurred where grass was added. Sucrose treated soils lost 73% of added nitrate during this period. Comparatively small amount of nitrate was lost from all the treatments of Ghior soil during 2-4 weeks of incubation. The loss during 4-8 weeks was, however negligible In T-soil, the maximum loss (24%) of nitrate nitrogen occurred in the sucrose treatment after 2 weeks of incubation. No loss occurred in the control soil during this period. During 2-4 weeks the loss was negligible. On the other hand, considerable loss was noticeable in the grass treated samples. A very small amount of nitrate was lost from the control and carbon treated samples during incubation.
