Agronomy Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur.

A set of experiments were carried out at the Centeral Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during April through December for four consecutive years. Aus rice (Var. BR21) and blackgram (Var. Barimash) as sole crops, and blackgram as strip crop with aus rice were tested during the early kharif season. After harvesting the early kharif crops, aman rice (Var. BRII) was transplanted under four N treatments (0,40,80 and 120 kg/ha). Yield of aus rice and blackgram varied from 1.16 to 2.40 t/ha and 0.25 to 0.85 t/ha, respectively depending on the treatments. During early kharif season the highest gross return (Tk. 13371/ha), net return (Tk. 6091 /ha) and benefit cost ratio (1.83) were obtained from row seeded aus rice (67%) + blackgram (33%) combination. The highest yield (4.32 t/ha) of T. aman rice was recorded with 120 kg N/ha when preceded by blackgram. On the whole the highest gross return (Tk. 36617/ha) and net return (Tk. 21 992/ha) were obtained from the cropping sequence aus rice-black gram-rice (T.aman with 120 kg N/ha), though the highest benefit cost ratio (2.54) was calculated from the same combination with 80 kg N/ha.

To assess the agro-economic advantages of strip cropping system to rice monoculture and subsequent effect on T. aman rice.

The experiments were conducted at Central Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur form 1987 through 1990. The soil belongs to Chhiata series of Grey Terrace soil having moderately slow permeability with pH 6.50. The soil is low in organic matter (1.l0%), NH4-N (14mg/kg), P(l5mg/kg), K (66mg/kg) and S(l6mg/kg). The treatments were I) broadcast sole aus rice, 2) row seeded sole aus rice, 25cm apart, 3) row seeded sole blackgram, 25cm apart and 4) row seeded aus rice (67%)+ blackgram in rows (33%) i. e. 4 rows of aus rice alternate with three rows of blackgram in strip cropping. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design with four replication. The size of each unit plot was 9m x 4.5m. The rice variety. 'BR21 ' and blackgram variety (Barimash) were used. The experimental plot was fertilized with 20 kg N/ha as basal dose for sole blackgram and sole aus rice. Twenty kg N as top dressing 15-20 DAS (Days after seeding) and rest 20 kg N/ha 35-40 DAS for aus rice sole and strip cropped situation. Full dose of P,K,S and Zn were applied through triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate at final land preparation as per recommendation for the individual crops. Green biomass of blackgram were incorporated into the soil after plucking (once only) of pods. The crop duration for blackgram and aus rice were 70 and 110 days respectively. T. aman rice was grown with four N fertilizer levels (0.40,80 and 120 kg N/ha). Treatment combinations were arranged in a split-plot design with four replication. Preceding crops and crop combination constituted the main plot treatment while N rates were accommodated as sub plot treatment. Fertilizer (60 kg P205 and 40 K20 kg/hay were given as basal and nitrogenous fertilizer as per treatment was top dressed ill three equal installments at 20,35 and 55 days after transplanting. Integrated left area index was calculated by LAI= LAI(Base crop)+ LAI (companion crop). Year to year variation in yield of T. aman rice was not statistically significant hence only pooled data of the years were considered. But year to year variation in yield of aus rice and blackgram were found significant.
