Root and Shoot Growth of Rice Cultivars in Response to Sodium Chloride Salinity

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect or NaCI salinity on root and shoot growth of six riee cultivars (IPK 3708, IPK 3711, Mala, Nizersail, Parija and Pokkali) was evaluated. Plants were grown in pots and irrigated for 20 days with NaCl solutions of EC 0,8 and 12 mS/cm at tillering stage. Shoot and root growth in all cultivars was affected by both 8 and 12 mS/cm levels of salinity and the growth reduction was pronounced at 12 mS/cm. Pokkali and IPK 3711 showed relatively high total root length, root length density, root weight density, and shoot weight. On the other hand, almost all the growth characters or Nizersail and Parija were relatively sensitive to salinity. Higher root growth or the tolerant cultivars, Pokkali and IPK 3711, than sensitive ones, Nizersail and Parija, presumably contributed to higher shoot growth under saline conditions.

Objectives:

To know the response of varying levels of NaCl salinity on root and shoot growth of six cultivars of rice

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out under semi-controlled environment at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture. Seedlings of six cultivars of rice viz., IPK 3708, IPK 3711, Mala, Nizersail, Parija, and Pokkali were employed in the study, Seeds of Pokkali, a salt tolerant cultivar (Yeo et al., 1991), were obtained from Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, IPK 3708 and IPK 3711 were collected from northern Thailand and the other four cultivars are indigenous. Eighteen day-old seedlings were transplanted on October 7, 1993 singly in pots (24cm dia. x 27 cm high) containing 10 kg air dried soil. Before transplanting the seedlings, 8-4-4 g of Urea, TSP and MP per pot were incorporated into the soil, and then sufficient water was added to saturate the soil. The pots were kept under natural sunshine till harvesting. Each of the cultivars was subjected to two levels of salinity of EC 8 and 12 mS/cm. Fifty percent of the respective NaCI solution was applied on 20 days after transplanting (DAT) and the rest on 27 DAT Plants in control group were irrigated with tap water. Since the salt not leached out of the pot only tap water instead of saline water was applied later on. EC values of the respective treatments were monitored and maintained by adding additional salt solution, if necessary, throughout the experimental period. The treatments were arranged in a split plot design and each treatment was replicated four times. Twenty days after the imposition of treatments plants were harvested on by cutting at the base. Plant height and the number of tillers per plant were recorded. The shoot was oven-dried at 70 °c for 48 hrs and the dry weight of shoot mass was recorded. Soil cores were removed using core sampler (118 mm dia. x 270mm high), Roots were carefully washed from the soil using running tap water. Root length (RL) and root length density (RLD) were measured following Drew and Saker (1980). Roots were oven- dried at 70⁰C for 48 hrs for recording root weight density (RWD).
