Effect of Sulphur and Silicon with High and Low Levels of Npk Fertilization on T. Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of sulphur and silicon with high and low levels of NPK fertilization at the old Brahmaputra Flood plains soils was studied on HYV rice (cv. Pajam). Combined sulphur and silicon application at 10 kg/ha gave 12.43 % increased grain yield, and when applied with different rates of NPK fertilizers grain yield increased further (10-36%) as compared with no NPK fertilization. Highest grain yield was 30. 7l % higher with 80-60-40 kg NPK/ha with sulphur and silicon and only 17.83% higher with no sulphur and silicon addition with same NPK fertilization than control. However. with the higher rate or NPK (i.c. 100-80-60 kg/ha) with sulphur and silicon increased grain yield by 28.05 % while it was 23.24 % with no sulphur and silicon application over control. The sulphur and silicon at 10 kg/ha thus supplemented about 40-20-30 kg NPK/ha in the experimental soils.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of sulphur and silicon under high and low levels of NPK fertilization in old Brahmaphutra Flood plain soils on the yield of transplant aman rice. cv, Pajam.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in typical rice growing soil of Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh during June to November, 1983. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The unit plot was 5m x 2m. Eight doses of N P K S Si kg/ha viz.,O-O-O-0-O ,0-0-0- 0- 0, 40-30-20-0-0, 40-30-20- 0-10, 80-60-40-0-0, 80-60-40-1 0- 0, 100-80-60-0-0 and 100-80-60-0-10. The experimental plots were fertilized with above mentioned doses of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and silicon through urea, tripple supper phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and sodium metasilicate, respectively. Half of urea. whole of T.S.P ., M. P. and gypsum were applied at the final land preparation and sodium metacilicate was applied 30 days after transplanting as per treatment. Rest half of urea was topdressed in two equal splits: one after 30 days ot transplanting i.e. at panicle initiation stage. Thirty five days old seedlings of rice (cv. Pajam were transplanted in the main field with a spacing of 25 cm x 20 cm: two seedlings were transplanted per hill. Weeds were controlled by uprooting and removing them three times from the field. At the initial stage of growth. the rice plants were attacked by leaf hopper and Rice hispa which were efficiently controlled by spraying malathion 50% EC twice. At harvest, data on different yield components were recorded from the randomly selected hills in each plot and those on grain and straw yields were recorded from the whole plot.
