Sulphur, Zinc and Boron Status of Four Major Soils of Tista Floodplain

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two hundred and ninety soil samples representing four soil series namely; Pirgacha, Palasbari, Gangachara and Kaunia of Tista floodplain were collected during soil surveys for Thana Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide preparation. Soil samples were analyzed 'and fourteen determinations including soil reaction, organic matter percentage, active acidity, Ca, Mg, K, N, P, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were made using extraction procedures and interpretation methods of Agro Services International (ASI). Soil test values of S, Zn and B were considered in this paper as these elements are most likely to be deficient in light textured soils. Deficiency of S was found not so acute as that of Zn and B. The data base thus can be used as a basis for conducting priority research.

Objectives:

To obtain information on types and magnitude of sulphur (S), zinc (Zn) and boron(B) deficiency in order to set research priorities.

Methodology:

Four major soil series were identified during thana level semi-detailed soil survey in Rangpur sadar, Pirgacha, Pirganj and Mithapukur thanas during the period of 1984-85. Composite soil samples were collected from plow depth at the rate of one sample for every 400 hectare of the series concerned. The soil samples were analyzed in the laboratory of soil science division (SSD) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). In all 290 samples were analyzed. Fourteen determinations including soil reaction (pH), organic matter percentage, active acidity, Ca, Mg, K, N, P, S, B, Cu , Fe, Mn and Zn were made using ASI methodology, suitably adapted for Bangladesh condition. S, Zn and B was taken into consideration in this paper as these elements are most likely to be deficient in light textured soils. The critical levels used to interpret the soil test values for S, Zn and B were 12 ug, 2 J..lg and 0.2 ug per milliliter soil, respectively .
