A field experiment was conducted to evaluate three cultivars of pro so millet (Tushcr, Bpro-40 and Kumardhon) with six levels, of nitrogen (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 kg N/ha) during Rabi season, 1992-93. The cultivars kumardhon and Bpm-40 recorded higher values of plant height, leaf, test weight of seed which ultimately helped in producing greater grain yield. Growth, yield and yield components except test weight of seed were also significantly influenced by nitrogen. The results indicated that application of 60 kg N/ha was the most suitable for obtaining optimum growth and higher yield of this crop under the climatic condition of Mymensingh.

To study the growth and yield of some promising cultivars with different levels of nitrogen at the agro-ecological zone of old Brahmaputra flood plain.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory. Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during December to March. 1992-93. The soil was silty loam belonging to the agro-ecological zone of old Brahmaputra flood plain. The pH value of the soil was 6.7 with organic matter 1.10%, available N 0.082%. P205 0.085%. K20 0.083%, S 22.00 ppm and Zn2.8 ppm. Two contrasting groups of cultivars were chosen. Tusher, a high yielding variety (HYV) and Bpm-40, a promising cultivar belongs to the 'loose and one sided' group. The other promising cultivar Kumardhon belongs to the spreading group (Martin et al., 1976). The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications keeping the cultivars in the main plots and six nitrogen levels (0, 20.40, 60. 81) and 100 kg/ha) in the subplots. Individual plot size was 4 m x 2.5 m. Full dose of P (30 kg/ha) as triple super phosphate. K (30 kg/ha) as muriate of potash and half dose of nitrogen as urea were incorporated into soil before sowing. The remaining half dose of nitrogen was topdressed at the time of irrigation. The crop was sown in rows 25 cm apart Oil 20 December, 1992. A seed rate of 18 kg/ha was used. Two weddings were done, one at 15 DAE (days after emergence) and the other at 30 DAE. Thinning was done during Ist weeding keeping the plants 6cm apart in the row. One irrigation was done two days after second weeding. For recording total dry matter (TDM) accumulation/ plant (above ground plant parts) 10 plants were harvested from two sides of each plot at tillering (35 DAS), 50% flowering and maturity stage. Total leaf area of 10 plants. harvested at 50% flowering were measured by using an automatic leaf area meter. The plants were then oven dried at 700 C for 48 hours and dry weights were recorded. For recording 50% flowering. daily counts were made of the number of plants in the two centre rows of each plot. At maturity 10 plants were randomly selected and harvested from each plot 10 record the yield components. Grain yield was reduced from six rows from the centre of each plot. Grain yield was adjusted at 13 % moisture content. The data were analyzed statistically and the mean differences were compared with Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (Steel and Torrie, 1960).
