Performance of liquid and peat based inocula of bradyrhizobial strains TAL 102 and SEMIA 5019 on soybean cultivars (Sohag and G-2) were studied at four diverse locations of Bangladesh The effect on varieties was not consistent with significant effect in some cases. Of the two forms liquid inocula were found either better than the peat inocula or similar in activity. The NifTAL strain TAL 102 recorded better results in both forms than the Brazilian strain 5019 in most cases. Urea, in general, was better than control but inferior to any of the inoculation treatment. Of the two varieties Sohag did better than G-2 in almost all cases. Of the interaction treatments, the combination Sohag x L 5019 recorded highest number of nodules (25.50/plant at Rangpur), maximum nodule mass (239.20 mg/plant at Mymensingh), seed yield (2.8 tonlha at Rajshahi) and total seed N (167.9 kg/ha) while stover yield was maximum with x L 102 combination at Rajshahi (3.73 ton/ha). It is revealed that liquid inocula has a good prospect in increasing growth and yield of soybean in Bangladesh.

To compare the performance of liquid inocula with new formulations and peat inocula with commonly used yeast extract mannitol broth using two soybean varieties as the test crop at four locations of Bangladesh.

Soil: Experiments were conducted at Rangpur, Rajshahi, Ishurdi and Mymensingh. Some important physico-chemical characteristics  are identified.Crop: Two varieties of soybean (Glycine max (Merrill) L.), Sohag and G-2 were used in the experiments. Inoculation and fertilizer treatments: Two Bradyrhizobium strains TAL 102 (USA origin) and SEMIA 5019 (Brazilian origin) were used in both liquid and peat based culture (Vincent, 1970, Somasegaran and Hoben, 1994). The composition of liquid media (G5) per litre was mannitol 1.0gm, K2HP04 0.5gm, MgS04.7H20 0.2gm, NaCI O.lgm, yeast extract 1.0, Glucose 1.0gm, arabinose 0.5gm, PVP K30 20gm, FeEDTA 0.073 and Glycerol 4 ml, while peat based inoculant based on yeast extract mannitol broth (25ml /100gm peat inoculant) consisted of mannitol 1.0gm, K2HP04 0.5gm, MgS04.7H2o 0.2gm, NaCI O.lgm and yeast extract 0.5gm per litre (Smith 1992). Cultures were grown for five days in shaker. There were two liquid inoculation treatments with two rhizobial strains designated as L 102 (liquid culture with TAL 102) and L 5019 (liquid culture with SEMIA 5019) and two peat inoculant treatments, P 102 (peat culture with TAL 102) and P 5019 (peat culture with SEMIA 5019). An uninoculated treatment (designated as Uninoc) and urea @ 50kg N/ha (Uso) were also included in the experiment. The inoculum rate was 5ml/kg seed for liquid inoculum and 20gm/kg seed for peat inoculum. The inoculum load was in the order of 105- 106 cells per seed. Inoculation was direct to seed in case of liquid inoculum while sugarcane molasses at 30gm/kg seed was used as sticker in case of peat inocula. Urea and basal dose of single super phosphate (35kg P/ha), muriate of potash (50kg K/ha) and ammonium molybdate (0.7kg Mo/ha) were applied at the time of land preparation. The unit plot size was 4m x 2.5m and the treatments were quadruplicated. The experimental design in each location was a split plot with varieties in the main plot and inoculation treatments in the subplots. Data on nodulation (total nodules and nodule mass) were recorded at mid-flowering stage while seed yield and nitrogen content of seeds were recorded/estimated at full maturity. Data were analyzed separately for each of the soil types and when the ANOVA was significant (P<0.05) the Duncan Multiple Range Test was used to indicate treatment differences.

Our results clearly demonstrated the identical results of peat and liquid inocula using two different bradyrhizobial strains in both the soybean varieties. The magnitude of superiority of both the forms of inocula (liquid/peat) over uninoculanted and urea treated plots was also more or less similar. Hence the possibility of reducing high costs and problems associated with processing peat and other solid carriers is great.
