In  a  catfish rearing pond   In  Mymenslngh it was  noted   that Asplanchana exhibited strong  (P < 0.001)  Inverse correlation with  Pelopia  (r = - 0.800). Chiro·nomus (r = - 0.683) . Dero  digitata (r = - 0.535). Ligumia (r = - 0.604). Lamellidens  marginalis (r = - 0.563) and   Metrocenimus  kabi  (r = - 0.645). Polyarthra and  Euchlanis showed  strong (P < 0.001) correlation with Pelopta (r = - 0.525) and  L. marginalis (r = 0.530). Mesocyclops  and  Moina showed strong correlations (P < 0.001) with  Brachionus  sowerbyi. Ceratium showed  direct relationship (P < 0.001) With Chironomus  (r = 0.584). Ligumia (r = 0.631) showed Inverse  correlation With Ephemerella (r = - 0.547).

To identify the important food items for  many fishes including catfishes and thus play  a vital  role in aquatic food chains

The  study was conducted in  a pond   situated at the   Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The  area of the  pond  was  7260 sq ft. The  average depth of water varied from 1.22  to 1.83 meter and the duration of the experiment was from January 1984 to December 1984. A cemented wall of about 0.3048 meter in  height was  constructed around the  pond  bank. The   plankton samples  were  collected once  in every  month between 9 : 00 and  11 : 00 a.m. from 3 pre-selected stations. Collections were  made by a Kemmerer type  water sampler fn,m  surface. mid  and  bottom water. Ten litres of water sample from earth depth of  every of  station  were collected and filtered through a plankton net  of  55  bolting silk. The plankton samples were  immediately fixed in 4%  formalin, and stored in refrigerator for subsequent studies. For analysis the  stored samples were shaken well and  then 1 ml was  quickly  drawn from  it With the  help  of a pipette and placed on  a SedgWick  Rafter counting cell. The  cover glass was  placed carefully over  the  chamber to  avoid  air-bubles. A random microscope field  was selected and identification and counting of planktons were  done With the  ocular micrometer grid.  It was  repeated 10 times. All planktons were  identified to the  level of genera and  where possible upto species.  The   benthic samples were collected by  using a  225 cm2 Ekman  Dredge. For the convenience of  the work 9 stations were  selected. Among  them, three stations were  in the  depth range of 0.30-0.60 m. three in the  depth range of  0.60-2.74 m,  and the  other three more   than 2.74 m  depth.  After collection the   sample was  seived by  means of  standard  brass seives having mesh size  2.4,  1.2 and 0.2  mm. The  residues were  brought to the laboratory and  the  organisms were  sorted out  by placing them on  white enamel. The organisms were   preserved  in  vials with 10%  formalin. Collected organisms  were   identified  to  the lowest possible taxa. Identifications were  done. Mean and standard  error of  zooplanktons and  benthos  were   calculated. Product correlation was also  determined  between pairs  of selected variables.

Thirty available genera and species of zooplankton showed either positive or  negative correlation with the  abundance of  24  genera and species of  benthos. Asplanchana  exhibited more   strong (p <  0.001) correlation with the various genera and  species of benthos then others. Again, Rotarai, Testudinella, Brachionus forficula. Noiholca, Keraiella cochlearis, K.  valga, Bosmina. Diapiomus, Cyclops. Moina. Paramecium. Ceratium and Trachelomonas did  show more  correlations with   some genera and species  of benthos than others. Little correlation values were noted  among  some  genera and  species of benthos with  the Filinia, Brachionus patulus,  Mesocyclops, Eubranchipus  and  Vorticella  of zooplankton. It is important to note  here  that  there  eXisted insignificant (p < 0.05) correlation values  of Daphnia and   Ceriodaphnia with  all the abundant genera and species of benthos where  negative correlation values  were  more  in number rather than positive  ones. Asplanchana exhibited strong  (p < 0.001)  inverse correlation with Pelopia (r = - 0.800). The correlation values between zooplankton and benthos may  be du to some  physico-chemical and biological factors prevailing in  the  pond. The negative correlation values between zooplankton and benthos may be due to certtn benthos directly feeding on  zooplankton. Several chironomid species feeding  directly  on filamentous  plankton, as do   various gastropods.
