Study on the Sequences of Fertilizer Application on T. Aus Rice - T. Aman Rice - Wheat Cropping Pattern in Calcare0us Dark Grey Flood Plain Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted in calcareous dark grey flood plain silty clay loam soil in Pabna to evaluate the residual effect through crop response of phosphate, potash, zinc and sulphur applied in different sequences to preceeding crop(s) in T. aus- T. aman-Wheat cropping pattern and thereby economize the fertilizer use. Split-plot design was used with three replications. Four sequences of fertilizer application, viz. fertilization in every crop, fertilization in alternate crop, fertilization after every two crops and fertilization after every there crops constituted the main plot treatments and eight different combinations of the said nutrients formed the sub-plot treatments. The result showed that all the four sequences of fertilizer application produced the similar yield in all the crops of the pattern. Moreover, application of only nitrogen to the succeeding crops of T. aus and T. aman was sufficient for optimum yield if all nutrients were applied to preceding wheat crop. The highest economic return was obtained when nitrogen was applied along with phosphorus, potassium, zinc and sulphur after three crops.

Objectives:

To optimize the productivity of T. aus rice-T. aman rice-Wheat cropping pattern in calcareous dark grey floodplain soil of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute , Ishurdi from November 1982 to March 1984 in calcareous dark grey floodplain soil. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. Four variable sequences of fertilizer application and eight combinations of different fertilizers formed the treatments. The four sequences of fertilizer application were fertilization in every crop (S₁), fertilization in alternate crop (S₂) fertilization after every two crops (S₃) and fertilization after every three crops (S₄) which were randomly assigned to the main plots. The eight fertilizer combinations were treated in the sub-plot and across the season. Each unit plot measured 6m x 8m with 75 cm border between the plots. T. aus rice- T.- aman rice -Wheat cropping pattern was selected for the study. Regardless of the sequences, the first crop, wheat received the recommended dose of phosphate, potash, zinc and sulphur. In T. aus in 1983 only S, was fertilized with the eight fertilizer doses but others were not fertilized. In T. aman season S₁ and S₂ were fertilized but not S₃ and S₄' Nitrogenous fertilizer was applied at full recommended dose in each crop. The varieties used for the pattern T. aus rice-T.aman rice wheat were BR-6, BRll and Balaka, respectively. Other recommended cultural operations were done as and when required. Harvesting of the crops were done on whole plot basis and threshed after sun drying. The grains were cleaned, weighed and adjusted to 12 % moisture content. Data relating to grain yield were subjected to statistical analysis.
