Effect of Plant Population and Nitrogen on the Yield and Yield Attributes of Okra

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Okra (Hibiscus esculentus L.) was grown for two years at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong at 10, 20, 30 plants m^-2 with 0, 40 80 and 120 kg N ha^-1 Thirty plants m^-2 gave the highest green pod yield (12 t ha^-1) for both years which was harvested at three day interval, but the yield plant ^-1 and the number of pods plant^-1 were decreased with increased plant population. Plant height, pod length and diameter, all increased with increased nitrogen level but number of green pods plant was unaffected with nitrogen. With 20 plants m^-2 highest yield was obtained from 80 kg but with 30 plants m^-2 highest yield was obtained from 120 kg N ha^-1

Objectives:

To maximize the yield of okra under Chittagong conditions.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted for two seasons at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong during April to June 1986 and 1987. The soil is silty loam with pH 5.5 to 6.0. Before opening the land soil samples were taken from ten spots of the experimental area for analysis.The land was ploughed well to get good tilth and no organic manure was applied. The experiment was laid out in a factorial randomized complete block design with four replications. The treatments were : Plant population - 10, 20 and 30 plants m^-2 and N level - 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N ha^-1. During final land preparation triple superphosphate at 90 kg and muriate of potash at 70 kg ha^-1 were applied as basal and N in the form of urea was side dressed in two equal splits - one at 10 and another at 40 days after sowing. Okra cv. Penta green seeds were sown at 50 x 20, 50 x to and 50 x 6.9 cm plant spacings to get the desired population. Two seeds were sown in each pit and on emergence the plants were thinned to one plant hill^-1 following selection for uniformity. The plots were kept weed free and water was applied as and when required. The immature pods were harvested at three day interval as long as plants were bearing.Final yield is the cumulative of all the harvests. Plant height, number of pods plant^-1, pod length and diameter were taken at harvest and the data were analyzed using standard statistical procedure.

Achievement/Findings:

Higher plant population increased okra yield and a population of 3,00,000 plants ha^-1 gave the highest green pod yield. The yield of okra was also greatly influenced by nitrogen application and the higher yield was obtained by adding 120 kg nitrogen ha^-1 in Chittagong.
