Storage Diseases of Potato in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three varieties of potato namely Multa, Patrones and Jaerla were stored in 3 cold- storage in different places of Bangladesh in 1977 to investigate storage diseases. It was found that 2.6-6.6 '1. loss of tubers took place due to diseases in these stored tubers, Among the diseases, Fusarium dry rot was most common. Soft rot caused by Erwinia sp, and common scab caused by Streptomyces scabies were frequently observed. Some physiological diseases like hollow heart, black heart and freezing injury were also recorded. Isolation from dry rot affected tubers from these cold storages yielded 3 types of Fusarium isolates. Morph- ological, cultural and pathogenic characteristics of these isolates were studied, On the basis of the characteristics found, the isolates were identified as Fusarium caeruleum(Lib) Sace .Fusarium acuminatum Ell & Ev. and Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht..

Objectives:

To find out the nature of diseases, extent of loss and the kinds of organisms involved in the diseases of potatoes in cold storage in this country

Methodology:

Three cold storage namely Comilla Co-operative Cold Storage. Fatullah Cold Storage and Munshiganj Cold Storage ware selected for this investigation. Three varieties of potato, namely Multa, Patronee and .Jaerla were purchased in the harvesting season ( February-April) of 1977. In Tubers were more or less of the same size. each cold storage, 2 bags each containing approx. 75 Kg of healthy potatoes of each variety were stored. The tubers were cooled at 46°_50°F for 24 hours before putting into storage where the temperature ranged from 340.380F during the entire period of storing. At the end of storage period ( middle of November), the bags were opened and the diseased tubers were )ort. ed out and weighed. This amount was deducted from the total amount originally stored in each bag so as to find out the loss due to diseases. While obtaining this figure for loss due to diseases, adjustment was made for the loss in weight due to dehydration of the tubers during the per. iod of storage (this loss is close to 1.8 kg per 75 kg of potato in each bag). From this figure, percentage of loss due to diseases in each cold storage was calculated. Diseased tubers were recognized by visual observation of symptoms and the samples of diseased tubers were brought to the laboratory for the purpose of isolating the causal organisms to identify the nature of diseases. In case of dry rot caused by Fuserium SPP., different kinds of isolates were obtained. These isolates were studied for their morphological, cultural and pathogenic characteristics to identify the spec- ies. For studying morphological and cultural characters, the isolates were grown on PDA ( Potato Dextrose Agar) at 24o± 10C. For testing pathogenicity of the isolates, tubers of Eigenheimer variety were used. The experiment was conducted in September when the tubers were mature. The tubers were inoculated by "Cut method" ( Khan 1968) using 10 tubers per isolate and making 3 such replications tor each isolate, The inoculated tubers were then incubated for 6 weeks in hardboard boxes at a temperature of 14°- 26⁰C for the development of dry rot.
