Effect of Time of Thinning and Plant Population on the Yield of Cotton

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Cotton Research Station. Mahiganj, Rangpur (Bangladesh) during July-January of 1984-85 and 1985-86 to compare the effect of time of thinning and plant population on the yield of seed cotton (cv. BAC-77). Plants were thinned to 1.2 and 3 plants per hill corresponding to 55 x 10³, 111X 10³ and 167 x 10³ plants/ha. Thinning was done at 15, 30 or 45 days after emergence (DAE). Seed cotton yield was significantly affected by the number of plants per hill but not by the time of thinning. Three plants per hill gave the highest yield which was followed by two plants per hill. The lowest yield was obtained from one plant per hill. Two years data indicated that the highest seeded cotton yields (3.14 and 3.00 t/ha) could be obtained from three plants per hill.

Objectives:

To compare the effect of time of thinning and plant population on the yield of seed cotton (cv. BAC-77)

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Station, Mahiganj, Rangpur.The treatments consisted of three different dates of thinning such as 15,30 and 45 days after emergence (DAE). One, two and three plants per hill were used corresponding to 55 x 103, 111 X 103 and 167 x 103 plants per hectare. A split plot design with three replications was adopted with time of thinning in the main plot and plant number per hill in the sub-plot. Each plot measured 6.0m x 4.8111. Harvest was done from a net area of 4.8m x 3.6m. Cotton var. BAC-77 was used in this trial. Six to ten seeds were sown in a hill 30 centimeters apart within a row maintaining a inter-row distance of 60 centimetres. The hills were thinned by hand to one, two or three plants per hill at 15,30 and 45 DAE of the crop. Nitrogen (N) Phosphorus (P₂0₅₎, Potassium (K₂0) and Sulphur(S) were applied at the rate of 30, 50, 60 and 20 kg/ha in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively at sowing as basal dose. Additional 60 kg N/ha was applied as top dressing in two equal installments i.e. 4 and 8 weeks after emergence of cotton plant. In 1984 the sowing date was August 15 where as in 1985 the sowing date was August 18. Insecticide' Ripcord' was sprayed twice to control cotton jassid (Amrasca bigutulla shir) and spotted boll worm and other insects.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest yield 3.14 t/ha was obtained when cotton was thinned to three plants per hill at 30 DAE and followed by plants thinned at 15 or 45 DAE. Minimum yields (2.07 and 1.64 t/ha) were recorded from the treatment with one plant per hill thinned at 45 DAE. Interaction between time of thinning and plant per hill on seed cotton yield was not significant. Seed cotton yield per plant was not significantly affected by time of thinning but by plants per hill. The interaction effect of time of thinning and plant per hill on yield per plant was not significant in both the years. Boll weight was not affected significantly hy time of thinning and plant per hill in both the years. With dense plant population the boll number per plant were much less because of severe inter-plant competition.
