Influence of Tillage on the Yield Performance of Dry Seeded Aus Rice.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture during the early wet season, 1988 to evaluate the effects of four tillage systems on the yield performance of dry seeded aus rice. Four treatments included were: (T_I) two ploughings and one laddering, (T₂) four ploughings and two laddering, (T₃) six ploughings and three laddering, and (T₄) fine tilth using power tiller. Soil moisture of the plough layer was determined during land preparation and early establishment phase of rice. Initial soil moisture content was appreciably low and there was a slight progressive reduction in moisture proportional to the degree of tillage. Emergence of seedling was much lower in minimum tillage (T_I and T₂) plots compared with optimum tillage (T₃ and T₄) plots. The difference in population density among the tillage treatments diminished progressively and at maturity it was identical for all treatments. Tillage treatments had no significant effect on the rice yield or on the attributes of yield. Rice yield varied from 3.233 to 4.700 t/ha. Such a small difference was mainly governed by number of panicles per m².

Objectives:

To evaluate the effects of four tillage systems on the yield performance of dry seeded aus rice

Methodology:

A field experiment was carried out at the Experimental Farm of Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture, Salna, Gazipur during the wet season of 1988. Four different tillage practices (T_I= two ploughings and one laddering, T₂ = four ploughings and two laddering, T₃ = six ploughings and three laddering and T₄ = fine ploughing using power tiller) constituted the treatments. Tillage practices in T_I through T₃ were accomplished by country plough and bullocks. The treatments were placed in a randomized block design. Soil moisture status of the upper 0-10 cm layer was monitored before and after the introduction of tillage treatments. Unsprouted rice seeds (cv. BR 20) were shown in rows 20 cm apart on April II, 1988. A seed rate of 90 kg/ha was used. Fertilizers at the rate of 60, 40 and 40 kg/ha of N, P₂O₅ and K₂0, respectively were applied. N fertilizer was applied at three equal installments; as basal,at l5 days after sowing (DAS) and at panicle initiation (PI) stage. Soil moisture was recorded daily during early seedling establishment phase. Seedling emergence was recorded for 10 days following sowing. Population density was monitored at different growth stages. At maturity, rice yield and yield attributes were recorded.
