Duckweed (spirodela Polyrhiza, Landolt and Kandeler 1987) for Nutrients Recycling from Domestic Wastewater and Use as Fish Feed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of duck weed Spirodela polyrhiza for nutrient recycling from domestic wastewater showed that Spirodela polyrhia has high productiv ty (up to 170 kg dry weight per hectare per day) and remarkable high protein content ( u p to 29% or the dry weight ) in domestic wastewater culture. It tolerates and also contains high amount of nitrogen and phosphorous. It is possible to remove up to 7.9kg nitrogen and 0.63 kg phosphorous/hectare/clay . More temperature. crowding and pH have noticeable effects 0n the productivity and nutrients ( nitrogen and phosphorus) uptake. Spirodela polyrhia culture on domestic wastewater contains 1 8 to 29 per cent protein and it varies from first bend to last bend. Spirodela polyrhia was used as fish feed in carp polyculure in the present study. It was estimated that about 4.5 metric ton of fish produced per hectare from a ten month cycle.

Methodology:

The research was conducted on a pilot project entitled 'Duckweed Based Wastewater Treatment Plant (PRISM Bangladesh, 2000) located at Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) cam pus at the southern part of the Khulna City Corporation (KCC), Bangladesh. Four fish ponds with an area of 1.007 ha were selected. Wastewater was collected from the ends of the drainage network developed in the KCC, Ward-3 and used in the treatment plant after primary treatment and analyzing wastewater characteristics . Spirodela polyrhiza was cultivated in the plug flow of the treatment plant with a base stocking density of 500 g/m² . To prevent dispersal of Spirodela polyrhiza by wind and current, bamboo 's grid barriers of 7m x 7m were applied. Spirodela polyrhiza was harvested regular interval to prevent crowding and achieved maximun production. Grab samples. were collected from middle point of each bend of the plug-flow and five inches below the surface. They were collected from October 20 to October 30. 2001 from 9.00 to I 0.00, (48 hours interval ). Time interval between collection and analysis was 8 hours. The samples were collected in pre-sterilized (washing by 0.01 N H₂S0₄ solution) one litter plastic bottles and preserved with 40 mg HgCl₂/l. The samples were analyzed at Laboratory of SRDI , Khulna and Environmental Science Discipline, Khulna University , Khulna, Bangladesh. BOD was determined by Winkler's method (APH A 1981). total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) by Kjeldahl method (APHA 1981 ), total phosphorous (TP) by Stannous Chloride Method (APHA 1981) and protein was analyzed after Sawyer et al. 1 994.

Spirodela polyrhiza shows high potential for nutrients recycling through uptake by plant from domestic wastewater for their rapid growth rate, ease of harvest, high. nutrient content. extended growing and harvesting periods and lack of serious pest. Spirodela polyrhiza culture in domestic wastewater has a much higher nutritional value and nutrient content than natural water. The nutritional value of dry Spirodela polvrhiza compares favorably with that of presently used fish and animal feed ingredients. Unicellular algae, very low and high temperature, crow-ding, pH, wind and current have noticeable effects on the productivity and nutrients uptake of Spirodela polyrhia.
