Effect of Different Sources of Organic Materials Alone and in Combination with Two Fertilizer Levels on Growth Parameters and Composition of Rice.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A set of field experiments were carried out in the Atomic Energy Commission's Experimental Farm, Tongi, Dhaka to study the effect of different sources of organic materials alone and in combination with two fertilizer levels on growth parameters namely tiller number. height of plants and composition (N-P-K) of rice plants. It was observed from the experiment that organic materials in combination with chemical fertilizers responded better over the organic materials alone.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different sources of organic materials alone and in combination with two fertilizer levels on growth parameters namely tiller number. height of plants and composition (N-P-K) of rice plants.

Methodology:

A field experiment with rice was performed in the experimental field of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission at Tongi, Dhaka. The soil belongs to the chhiata silt loam series of Red Lateritic soils of the Madhupur Tract. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design with four replications. The land was prepared by plowing and cross plowing as many as three times. The field was subsequently leveled by using ladder. Ridges of soils were raised along the four sides of each of the small plots to prevent movement of water from one plot to another. There were 64 plots having an area of one meter square each. Two seedlings of five weeks old rice plant ( Naizersail variety) were planted in Aman season with a spacing of 18 em from row to row and 20 cm from hill to hill. The purpose of the experiment was to study the effect of different sources of organic materials (Mustard oil cake, cow- dung, water hyacinth, rice straw and sugar- cane stalk at the rate of 5 ton/ha each) alone and in combination with two fertilizer levels F_l and F₂(F_l =45 kg N/ha+30 kg P/ha+30 kgK/ha and F₂= 90 kgN/ha + 60 kg P/ ha+60 kg K/ha) on growth parameters namely tiller number, height of plant and plant composition (N--P-K). Soil samples representing 0-6 cm depth were collected, air dried and ground to pass through a 2 mm sieve and then mixed thoroughly to make one composite sample for analysis and represented The organic materials such as rice straw, water hyacinth and sugarcane stalk were chopped into small piece; and air dried. Oil cake and cow dung were air dried and ground. Organic materials were applied in the experimental plots at the rate of 5 ton/ha. Seven days after the application of organic materials the chemical fertilizers were applied. The rice seedlings were planted the same day.. The chemical composition of organic materials used in the field . The experimental plots were irrigated regularly throughout the growing period to keep the land inter militantly submerged condition. Plant samples were collected for laboratory analysis at three different stages of growth. Such as (i) maximum tillering stage (ii) flowering stage and (iii) harvesting stage. Collected plant samples were dried for 16 hours at 65°C. Samples were then ground in the laboratory mill and preserved in polythene bags for analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Tiller number and height of plant shows the effect of different sources of organic materials alone and in combination with chemical fertilizers on tiller number and height of rice plant at different stages of growth. It is evident that oil cake is superior to all sources at all stages at growth in terms of tiller number and height of plant. In treatments where fertilizers were added oil cake maintained its superiority over the other sources. Interestingly enough, addition of higher fertilizer dose (F₂.) to oil cake did not increase tiller number and height of paint significantly. Although slight increase in both the cases has been recorded. Addition of fertilizers did not increase number of tillers significantly for water hyacinth as well although increase was observed for cow dung, rice straw and sugar cane stalk. Addition of fertilizers did not increase height of tillers significantly for any of the sources. It is also observed that increase in the tiller number and height of plant due to different sources of organic matter at higher fertilizer dose (F₂.) was statistically insignificant as compared to lower fertilizers dose (F_l)' Higher fertilizer dose (F₂.) has little effect on tiller number and height of plant for different sources of organic materials.
