Examination Roll No. 03 Ag CBot.-JJ3 M Semester: January-June 2004, Registration No.: 22557, Session : 1995-96; MASTERS OF SCIENCE (M.S.) IN CROP BOTANY

A sand culture experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of different levels of salinity on some metabolic activities and yield of three jute genotype  C-40, C-443 and C-36. The salinity treatments were control or no salt, 3 dSm -1, 6 dSm -1, 9 dSm -1 and 12 dSm -1. Results indicated that salinity treatments had significant effects on nitrate accumulation. Gcnotype C-40 had higher nitrate accumulation. Both reducing and total sugar accumulation were decreased due to different levels of salinity. Genotype C-40 had the highest accumulation of sugar and C-36 accumulated the lowest. Total amino acid accumulation was the highest in C-40 genotype. K  accumulation varied little among the genotypes. Na accumulation in the genotype C-40 decreased at high salt treatment. Phosphorus accumulation was less affected in all the genotypes due to salinity treatment. Nitrogen accumulation showed significant variation. Genotype C-40 had the highest accumulation of nitrogen at high salt stress condition. Dry weight of leaf, shoot and root also showed significant variation. In spite of salinity stress genotype C-40 produced the highest dry matter. Root volume showed significant variation among the genotype with C-36 had the highest root volume. From the above results it may be indicated that C-40 performed better than that of the other two genotypes with respect to morphophysiological and biochemical parameters under salinity stress.

1. To investigate effect of salinity on plant height and growth parameters; and 2. To study effect of salinity on some biochemical feature.

A sand culture experiment tn the pot was earned out under varying levels of salinity with three Jute genotypes at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA). Mymensingh during the period from April 2003 to July 2003. For thts experiment earthen pots were lined with polythene bags to avoid leaching out of salt and any contamination. Jute seeds were sown in pots in April, 2003. Several seeds of jute genotypes were sown in each pot. Three plants were kept in each pot and extra seedlings were uprooted. Watering and other cultural practices were done if and when required. This was a two factor experiment: Jute genotype and different salinity levels. Five levels of salinity were given by adding different amount of sodium chloride (NaCI) in the pot. The required amount of salts were applied at 17 equal splits in 3-days intervals with a view to develops salinity in the growth medium gradually as it develops in the field condition. There were 15 treatments (3 genotype x 5 salinity) and was laid out in a Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Observations at ions were recorded for some Morpho-physiological and biochcmical parameters on specific dates of experiment. Modified Latcombe nutrient solution was used in the experiment. For growing plants in sand, earthen pots lined with polythene bags were filled with I 0 kg purified and dried sand . Eight surface sterilized jute seeds of each genotypes were sown in each pot. The sand was moistened with deionized water for germination. After germination of seeds the sand was flashed with 0.1 strength nutrient solution and after that nutrient solution was applied along with salt solution on seven day alter germination. 3 uniform seedlings were kept in each pot and the rests were uprooted. The collected data on various characterisitcs under the study were statistically analyzed to find out the levels of significance, using the MSTAT-C Package. The mean differences were compared by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).
