Abundance and Distribution of Phytoplankton in Mouri River

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the present investigation 56 species of phytoplankton under 26 genera were identified. The dominant class was Chlorophyceae in all the stations of the river Mouri followed by Bacillariophyceae. Maximum species were recorded under Cholorophyceae (28 species) and the minimum under Euglenophyceae (7 species). The dominant species were Navicula recta, Closterium micropomm, Oscillatoria irrigua, Euglena viridis and Spirogyra mienningensis. The abundance of phytoplankton varied from one station to another. Highest density of phytoplankton was recorded in station 6 (1630 indv .L.^-1) and the lowest in station 1 (825 indv. L^-1 ). Gross primary productivity of the Mouri River varied from 0.027 - 0. 130 mg 0₂ L^-1 h ^-1 . Highest productivit y was obtained in station 6 and the lowest in station 2. Diatom population correlated positively with pH and alkalinity. The densities of phytoplankton found to be significantly correlated with net primary productivity.

Objectives:

To study the abundance and distribution of phytoplankton, its primary productivity and relationship with physicochemical parameters in the river Mouri at Khulna.

Methodology:

The study was carried out along the course of Mouri River flowing through the north west side of Khulna Metropolis. The river dissected Dumuria Upazila from Khulna Metropolis and is about 9.6 km in length . It passed through vast agricultural fields and finally falls into the Shibsa river. Six working stations each having a distance of about 1.5 k m in between were set up for sampling. The stations are named: 1. Rayer Mohal , 2. Boyra , 3. Gollamari , 4. Nirala, 5. Nirala-west and 6. Labonchara. The sampling was carried out fortnightly for three months between January and March. 2005. For sampling, six stations were covered in six successive days in each fortnight. On each date of measurement, the sampling was started at 8 a.m. and completed at 4 pm . Water samples collected from 30 cm depth from the surface was used for the measurement of primary productivity by light and dark bottle technique (APHA 1985). A part of the same sample was brought to the laboratory and analyzed for pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), free C0₂ , alkalinity , hardness, phosphate and mintrate (APHA 1985). Concentrated samples of phytoplankton were collected from each station by passing a definite volume of river water through plankton net having 45 µm mesh width. The samples were fixed with 4% commercial formal in and quanlified with the help of Sedgewick Rafter Counting Chamber (APHA 1985). Phytoplankton were identified with the help of Bold and Wynne ( 1978), Davis ( 1955), Wicksted ( 1965), Islam and Zaman ( 1975), Owen et al . ( 1978), Sournia (1978) and Islam and Chowdhury ( 1979).

Achievement/Findings:

The present investigation reveals that the concentration and distribution of diatom is the key indicator for pollution assessment of the Mouri River. Diatom concentration increases with the increasing concentration of nutrients and the main sources of nutrient in this river is the sewage input.
