Breeding of Pond Reared Golden Mahseer Tor Putitora (hamilton- Buchanan) in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Breeding biology of pond reared golden mahseer, Tor putitora (Hami lton-Buchanan, 1 822) was studied during the month of November , 2003 to February , 2004 at BFRI, Mymensingh. The male and female fishes were reared for two-three years in separate brood pond with regular water flashing and supplementary feed. Breeding season lasts from early November to late February, but December is the best period of spawning. Some individual fish bred twice during the breeding season. Mature eggs and sperms were obtained by stripping without any hormonal treatment and fertilization was done by artificial insemination. Water flashing in the brood ponds at the rate of four times/day played a key role for the spawning of fishes. Mean sperm head length and egg diameter were measured to be 4.64 ± 0.24 µ m and 2.93 ±0.1 8 m m, respectively. The fecundity was estimated to be 4997/kg body weight. The fertilization rate was excellent, over 80 per cent and hatching rate was equally good, over 70 per cent. Hatching of fertilized eggs occurred within 69±3 hours after fertilization at water temperature of 22 - 27°C.

It is hoped that it will provide necessary information to the fish culturists and to those who are interested in conducting further research on this popular Pond reared fish.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during the natural breeding season of T. putirora from November, 2003 to February, 2004 at the hatchery of field research complex and laboratory of the Freshwater Station, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), Mymensingh , Bangldesh . The mature male and female fishes were collected from the brood rearing ponds of the hatchery . The brood rearing ponds were 0.2 hectare in size and water depth was maintained between 1 .6 and 2 meter. The water flashing was maintained for four hours a day in brood fish rearing ponds through the in let and out system of ponds. The fertilized eggs were then transferred into a hatching jar and maintained ambient water temperature and dissolved oxygen through continuous aeration. After 66 hrs of fertilization , hatching started to come out from the egg shell and hatching was completed with in another six hours. The rate of hatching was calculated The fecundity of T. putitora was plotted against their total length and body weight on arithmetic scales. To establish mathematical relationship between total length (TL) and fecundity ( F); body weight (BW) and fecundity (F), values of regression coefficient (b), intercept (a), correlation coefficient (r) and regression equation were estimated

Achievement/Findings:

The success of breeding promises that it will be possible to produce stocking material (seed) under farm conditions both for open water as well as for aquaculture. This will enhance mass seed production for culture practice of this fish in Bangladesh. To protect and conserve T. pulitora from being extinct and for proper development of breeding, nursing, culture as well as management technology , the knowledge from the present study would be applicable in a great extent.
