Different doses of acetone-dried  pituitary gland  of common carps were  used to assess the effects on spawning and egg quality of Indian major carps at two stages i. e. first  at l-2 hr of post-fertilization. when  eggs  get water hardening and then at 16-18 hr of post-fertilization, when larval  movement started. A total of 504 individual females of Catla Catla catla (Hamilton). Rohu Labeo rohita [Hamilton).  Mrigal  Cirrhinus  mrigala  (Hamilton) and Kalibaush L.  cal basu [Hamilton) were used  in the  experiment. Significant effect of hormone dose was observed in  Catla  and Rohu  both in  spawning and  egg quality. but in  case of Mrigal and Kalibaush it was only in spawning

To  study   the  effect of  hormone doses (pituitary extracts of common carps) on  spawning success and egg qualities of four major carps (Catla catla, La.beo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and L .calbasu) at 1-2 hr  and  16-18 hr of post-fertilization.

The  study was  conducted at the  hatchery complex of the  Fisheries Research Institute, Freshwater Station at Mymensingh from  April to July 1992. In this experiment 54 brood of female Catla. Catla catla (4.5 ±1.5 kg}.135 brood  females of Rohu  Labeo rohita (3 ± 1 kg). 225 brood females of Mrigal Cirrhinus mrigala (4  ± 2 kg) and  45 Kalibaush L. calbasu (3.5 ± 1.5 kg) were  used. The  male-female ratio was  3 : 2. The  broods were  selected by  visual observation of external morphological characteristics  (Haque 1988). Initially for each species. several screening tests were  performed to find out the  minimum dose of acetone-dried pituitary glands of common carps (APC) on the  brood parents. The brood females were injected intramuscularly  just  below the pectoral fin and the brood males were  injected at the  base of pelvic  fin. The  females were  injected twice, one preliminary and other resolving dose. The  interval between injections was  6 hours. The  males were  injected one time at the  time of resolving doses of female. After  injection. both the  sexes were released in  a circular spawning tank (diameter 9 meter and depth 1 meter) where water flow was 500 1/minute. During the  operation. single species was  used at a  time. The number of the  broods used was according to their size  and availability i. e. for Catla 6 females. for Rohu 15 females, for Mrigal  15 females and for Kalibaush 10 females. Fertilized eggs  were collected after successful matings between males and females. A nylon hapa was fixed  at the outlet of the tank to  collect the fertilized eggs.  Eggs  were  transported to  the hatching circular tanks and  funnels. The quality of  eggs  was  determined twice, once just  after water hardening i.e. 1 to 2 hr after fertilization, then after 16-18 hr when  larval movements were observed in  the  egg  shells. Fertilization rate can be established 1-2 hours post-fertilization. when fertilized eggs  are to  be transparent. Hatching can   be  determined 16-18 hr post-fertilization by observing  the  larval movement in the shell. The egg samples were  drawn from  2-3  positions in  the  circular hatching tanks and funnels. The data were treated statistically to find the influence, if any.  of different doses of APC on  the  spawning and  egg qualities of   the  tested fishes.

In  the present  experiment. efforts were   made to  collect data  on temperature which ranged from  25°C to 30°C in the  hatchery water. The hardness of the water was 160 ppm  and pH  ranged from 7.2  to 7.6. Ahmed (1944) found a  temperature between 25.5°C and 30.5°C in  the natural  breeding ground. This is  similar  to the  hatchery  water temperature. In the breeding of   major carp, 5-6  mg PG/kg  body  weight of female and 2.0-2.5 mg  PG/kg   body weight of male is suitable. Further experiments are  needed to study the  effect  of preliminary doses on  egg qualities after  fertilization. Significant effect of hormone dose was observed in  Catla  and Rohu  both in  spawning and  egg quality, but in  case of Mrtgal and  Kalibaush, it was only in spawning.
