Examination Roll No. 2002/Ag.Hort.JD-IS.M; Semester: January- June, 2004; Registration No. 21044, Session: 1994-95, Department of Horticulture, BAU

Two experiments were carried out in the field of the Germplasm Centre (GPC) of Fruit Tree Improvement Project (FTIP), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November, 2002 to July, 2003. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of pinching time of terminal bud and agrochemical spray on the growth performance of different varieties of mango grafts. All experiments were laid out in RCBD with 3 repIications. The first experiment consisted of six pinching times. viz., no pinching, ) 1st February pinching,15th February pinching, 1st March pinching, 15th March pinching and 1st April pinching and ten mango varieties, viz., Amrapali. Khirsapat, Gopalbhog, Langra, Maldah Fazli. Ashwina, Mohananda, Mallika, Surma Fazli and Neelambori. Variety influenced significantly on all of the growth parameters independently and combinedly. Mango cv. Gopalbhog showed the highest increase of plant height (54.88cm), scion length (50.60cm). total number of leaves (86.27), canopy volume (0.202m3) and branches (3.99). Besides these it took the second minimum time (32.03days) to post pinching sprout compared to mango cv. Amrapali (30.76days). On the other hand, 1st April pinching showed the positive effect on most of the parameters with minimum time (12.61days) to post pinching sprout than other pinching times. The second experiment consisted of seven types of spraying compound viz., water spray (control), urea (4%), surgrow (0.3%), ocozeme (0.1%). NAA (200ppm), GA3 ( I00ppm) and planotonic (0.10/0); and seven dates of spraying operation viz., 3rd February, 3rd March. 3rd April, 3rd February + 3rd March, 3rd February + 3rd April. 3rd March + 3rd April, 3rd February + 3rd March + 3rd April on mango grafts cv. Amrapali. Planotonic showed the highest increase in plant height (35.53cm), rootstock length (4.20cm), scion length (31.20cm). rootstock girth (0.697cm). scion girth (0.51Ocm), number of leaves (38.56), canopy volume (0.103m3 and number of branches (2.07). Most of these values were the lowest in control. On the other hand February spray individually and combinedly showed the best performance on the most of the important parameters studied. Considering all these results, 1st April pinching operation of mango grafts and response of variety cv. 'Gopalbhog' to this operation was found best. On the other hand planotonic 0.1o/o in 3rd February was found recommendable for best growth performance of mango grafts.

1. To find out the effect of pinching and foliar spray of different agrochemicals on mango grafts for vigour and well developed sapling with several branches and attractive canopy volume; 2. To find out the suitable agrochemical as foliar spray for best growth performance of mango grafts and 3. To find out the proper time of pinching and agrochemical spray.

Expt.1: A study on the effect of different pinching time of terminal bud on growth performance of different varieties of mango grafts. All the grafts for this experiment were selected at the GP Centre, BAU-DH, Mymensingh. The grafts were average one year old, unbranched and uniform in size. All grafts were previously prepared by cleft grafling. They were free from disease and any type of physiological disorder. All grafts were placed on nursery bed maintaining distance 40 cm from line to line and 35 cm from plant to plant. The experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of different pinching times on different varieties of mango grafts for their best growth, branching and canopy size. The two-factor experiment was conducted in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 10 mango varieties and 6 pinching time in 3 replications having 10 grafts per replication. Thus, 1800 mango grafts were planted during November, 2002. The grafts were planted in experimental plot, maintaining row to row spacing was 40cm and plant to plant spacing was 35cm. Drains of about 25 x 25 cm were made between each two beds for better drainage facilities. The pinching of the grafts was done as per assigned treatment. Mostly pinching was done as treatment just by removing of the apical bud by a sharp knife or nail. It was done to enhance more new shoots through breaking apical dominance. The initial data were recorded before each treatment and then to determine the quality of graft against each treatment. Final data were recorded at marketable stage in July, 2003. Data were recorded on graft height (cm), length of scion (cm), length of rootstock (cm), girth of scion (cm), girth of rootstock (cm), total number of leaves/graft, number of shoots/plant, canopy volume (m3 and days required to post pinching bud break. Expt.2: A study on the effect of foliar application of agrochemicals on the growth performance of mango grafts cv. Amrapali. The experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of foliar application of agrochemicals on mango grafts cv. Amrapali for their better grovvth perfonnances on nursery bed. The two-factor experiment was conducted in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 7 diflerent spraying time, 7 different types of spray material and 3 replications having 5 grafts per replication. The recorded data on different parameters were statistically analyzed by using MSTAT-C software to find out the significance of variation, resulting from the experimental treatments. The differences between the treatment means were judged by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 5% and 1% levels of probability
