Drainage congestion of Beel Dakatia was severely deteriorated due to the local influence of tidal saline water intrusion into the beel area through many openings since 1989. In this area, rapid sedimentation was mostly confined to near the openings where the depth of sediment varied from 0.2 to 1.6 meters and about 10 - 12% of the total area was covered with new sediments which have filled up most of the creeks passing through the beel area. Cumulative organic matter deposition and its slower decomposition rate during water logging period caused significant changes in chemical properties of the soils. Therefore, the overall salinity, pH and K levels have been found to have increased during the survey period. In general, organic matter, N, P and S content have increased considerably whereas Zn content for different soil groups have changed during the period of 1985 to 1995. Land use pattern in last two decades has also changed considerably.

In this study, special emphasis has been given to soil properties, drainage congestion, landscape, sedimentation, hydrology and land use patterns changing phenomena of Beel Dakatia.

Land use patterns of Beel Dakatia were investigated from 1985 to 1998 by questionnaire survey from local people of the beel. For study of soil of the beel, 12 composite topsoils were collected in May, 1995 at different spots scattered through the beel. The soil samples were prepared by grinding after air dryings. Chemical properties of soil, land type and hydrology related information were collected and compiled from Land and Soil Utilization guide of Dumuria and Fultola Thana (SRDI 1986). Information on land use pattern was collected (1985 - 1998) and compiled from reconnaissance soil survey report from Khulna and Bagerhat subdivision (SRDI 1973). During chemical analysis, different analytical methods were followed for estimation of different parameters. Phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) contents of these soil samples were determined by ascorbic acid method with the help of UV-visible Spectrophotometer (APHA 1992) and Flame photometric (Model: PEP 7 and PEP 7/C) method (Saxena 1990), respectively. P205 and K20 were estimated from the value of P and K by multiplying the conversion factor's 2.292 and 1.21, respectively. Turbidimetric method (Thermo, UV-visible Spectrophotometer) was used for estimation of sulphate (SO42). Electrical conductivity (EC) and pH of the soil samples were measured by conductivity meter and pH meter (Saxena 1990), respectively. The organic matter of the soil was determined by wet oxidation method (Alam et al. 1991). In this method, the organic matter of soil is determined by multiplying the content of organic carbon with a factor of 1.724. The ammoniacal nitrogen was determined by semi-microkjeldahl's method (Alam et al. 1991). Zinc content of the sample was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry using undiluted soil extracts (Saxena 1990).

• Conventional data collection by outsiders should be complemented by information generation process, which could take note of people's perception of the problem. • Local organization like village clubs, schools/colleges, cultural groups, local NGOs, local government bodies etc., should be meaningfully involved in both the planning and implementation phases of any development project that affects the survival economy and people's live at the grassroot level. • Introduction of small scale closed 'Gher' technique may be popularized by modifying existing structures and the area can be converted into a tidal basin. • To avoid crop damage by early rain/flood water, early variety of boro should be selected. • Abstraction of saline ground water for irrigation purpose in dry season within the beel area should be avoided. • Proper management of the sluice gates and connecting drainage creeks/channels/ should be ensured. • Peat soil should be drained in such a way that it always remains moistened. • Excess water should be pumped out by power pumps or windmills.
