Data were collected from a randomly selected sample of  150   farmers  to analyze the  maintenance problems of Deep Tubewell (DTW) irrigation during Boro rice   season. Findings indicated that ·adulteration of diesel and gear oil. unavailability of diesel, lack  of accurate  knowledge on  the  part of the  driver,  lack of prompt steps to repair the  engine, unavailability of BADC mechanics. engine was neither overhauled nor  kept  clean. non-availability of workshop facilities in the locality. as well  as lack  of  necessary. spare parts were  the  major maintenance problems.

To analyze the  maintenance problems of Deep Tubewell (DTW) irrigation during Boro rice season.

The  study was conducted in  the Kalia  and Dhamshar  unions of Daulatpur  thana   under Manikgonj district. Boro  rice  growers of these unions were the   target population of  the   study. These unions had 8 blocks and 65 villages (Kalia 31 and Dhamshar 34). Two blocks namely, Taluk Nagar  and Dhamshar were randomly selected from  those 8 blocks. These two blocks had 13 DTW Boro schemes (Kalia 5 and Dhamshar 8) and  most of  the villagers grow Boro  rice  under  these scheme. One hundred fifty rice growers were  proportionately selected from the selected two  villages through  random sampling  technique  to obtain the   95 percent level   of  confidence in   the   information. These 150 Boro rice growers (from 808 rice growers) constituted  the  sample of this study. Data were collected through personal interviews from the intended respondents. The  validity of the  instrument was  established by a panel of experts. The entire process of collecting data took  35  days from October 23 to November 25, 1993. The SPSS/PC+ computer program was used to analyze the data. Respondent's individual means and  standard deviations for  each of the   statements concerning the   three aspects of  DTW  irrigation were calculated. The mean scores could  range from  1.0  to 5.0,  1.0 indicating no problems in  DTW irrigation and 5.0 indicating severe problem. Based on the computed maintenance  problem confrontation scores (3.25-4.18)   the   respondents were finally classified into three groups: moderate  problem, serious problem and severe problem. Descriptive statistics (numbers, range,  percentages, mean  and  standard deviation) were used  for elaborate discussion of the data.

The  data collection  instrument contained 14 statements concerning the maintenance  problems of DTW. The  mean ratings by the  respondents for three statements: (1) Lack of necessary bulletin, books etc. about the  maintenance of engine; (2) Some mechanics do  not  possess good operation skill nor they have  proper know-how  about the engine;  and  (3) The driver lacks  proper  training on maintenance of the engine  ranged from 3.25 to 3.42, indicating moderate problems. The mean  ratings of the rest  eleven statements by the farmers ranged  from 3.5 to 4.18 indicating serious problem in respect  of maintenance of DTW in  Boro  rice. Findings regarding the  maintenance related problems in DTW irrigation of Boro rice revealed that adulteration of diesel  and gear  oil; unavailability of diesel; lack of accurate knowledge on the  part  of the  driver; lack of prompt steps to repair  the  engine  on  the part of the executive committee; unavailability of  BADC mechanics; engine was  neither overhauled nor kept clean;  unavailability of workshop in the  locality as well as necessary spare parts. were the serious problems as perceived by the respondents. DTWs are  used  mostly  for producing Boro crop.  particularly of high yielding varieties of Boro.  Due  to  maintenance problems most  of the DTWs  are under utilized  and  thereby causing shortfall in  per hectare production of Boro  rice. Timely supply of diesel and  gear  oil,  proper training of the  drivers to enrich their  knowledge, prompt steps to repair the  engine during the season, timely availability of the  mechanics to repair the  engines with   priority and   establishing local  workshop for repairs and  maintenance as well as supplying spare parts would  be an ideal  situation that would  help  keep  DTWs operating smoothly. Proper maintenance of DTWs  ensure its optimum utilization that would have a resultant effect on increasing productivity of HYVs. Therefore,  the resolve of maintenance problems of DTWs  would  not  only  increase the DTW command area, but  also increase the overall agricultural productivity.
