Phytoplankton Abundance in Relation to Physico Chemical Conditions of the Sundarbans Estuary

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Phytoplank ton abu ndance and physico-chemical conditions of water were studied i n three di fferent spots of the Buri goalini estuary near Sundarbans mangrove forest. A total of 14 genera of phytoplan kton belongi ng to Cyanoph yceae, Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae were recorded and 18 physico-chemical parameters were measu red. Coscinodiscus sp. are the domi nant species i n the study area. Cyanophyceae is the most domi nant group i n spot- I and spot-3 whereas Bacillariophyceae is the domi nant grou p i n spot-2. The water of the study area is alkal i ne i n nature.

Objectives:

To know the physico-chemical conditions, the diversity and abundance of phytoplankton and the relationship between physico-chemical conditions and phytoplankton diversity in the study area

Methodology:

Monthly samplings were carried out from August 2004 to Jul y 2005 near Burigoalini forest station, which is 55 km away from Satkhira main town under the Shamnagar Upazila of Satkhira district. Three sampling spots were selected for conducting the study including Pontoon Ghat (Spot-1), Kalagachia Forest Police Camp (Spot-2) and Gaburia union (Spot-3). Spot-1 is very close to the Burigoalini Forest Station. It is situated on the bank of the river Chuna. The area is inu ndated duri ng the period of high tide. Spot-2 is situated on the bank of the ri ver Arpangasia which is about 3 km south from Burigoalini Forest Station. Spot-3 is just the opposite side of the Burigoalini Forest Station and is situated on the bank of the river Arpangsia. The wastes of a village market named Gabura bazar are often thrown into the river. Local people use the river water for bathing, washing cloths and many other purposes. Water samples were collected from each spot from a depth of 35 - 40 cm below the surface by using a 250 ml glass stoppered bottle. Some water parameters were studied in the field and some were in the laboratory . For laboratory analysis the samples were kept in a dark and cool place. Air and water temperature were noted by a digital thermometer . Water transparency was determined by a Secchi disc. A digital pH meter was used for the measurement of pH of water while conductivity was noted by using a portable conductivity meter. . Identification of plankton was done immediately after collection. Plankton abundance was measured by using a Sedgewick Rafter counting chamber (Welch 1948) and expressed in unit/I whether it is an individual or a cell or a filament or part thereof.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study has given an idea on the phytoplankton population of the study area. More research to be conducted to develop the basic knowledge on the ecosystem that may help to balance the ecology of mangrove through proper management and conservation of the Sundarbans mangrove ecosystem
