Seed Yield, Protein Content and Nutrient Uptake of Soybean (glycine Max L. Merrill) as Influenced by Potassium

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of potassium (K) on yield, protein.content and nutrient uptake of soybean. The soybean variety, G-2 (Bangladesh soybean-4) was used in this experiment as test crop. The treatments were: K ₁ (Without K), K₂, K _3, K₄_, K₅ and K ₆ were application of 50, 75, 100, 125 (25% higher) and 150% (50% higher), respectively of the BARC recommended dose of K. Nitrogen , P and S were applied as blanket as per BARC recommendation. Seeds were inoculated with Bradyrhizobium inoculum before sowing. The application of K (K₅ treatment) produced the highest seed yield (7.61 g/plant), which was 82.93% higher than that of the control. The seed yield-change with the increase of K application showed non-linear in nature. The nutrient uptake and protein content in seeds of soybean also increased with increasing levels of K (up to 9.38 kg K/ha). The application of K at 9.38 kg/ha (25% higher over BARC recommended rate) gave the highest yield, protein content and nutrient uptake by seeds of soybean.

Objectives:

To study the influence of potassium on the yield, protein content and nnutrients uptake of soybean

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the experimental space of Botany Department, Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Dhaka, during Rabi season of 2004 - 2005 with a view to determining the influence of K on yield, protein content and nutrient uptake of soybean. The experiment was laid out in a complete randomized design with six levels of K treatments. Each treatment was replicated thrice. The treatments and their levels were : K ₁= No application of K, K₂ = 50% K of BARC recommended dose i.e. K @ 3.75 kg/ha K₃= 75% K of BARC recommended dose i.e. K @ 5.63 kg/ha, K₄= 100% K of BARC recommended dose i.e. K @ 7.50 kg/ha, K₅ = 125% (25 % higher) K of BARC recommended dose i.e. K @ 9.38 kg/ha, K₆= 150% (50 % higher) K of BARC recommended dose i.e. K @ 11.25 kg/ha. Potassium was applied as Muriate of Potash (MOP). In addition to K, other nutrients such as N, P and S were applied @ 21.16 kg, 9.00 kg and 1.80 kg/ha, respectively as urea, TSP and gypsum (Fertilizer Recommendation Guide - 1997, BARC). The plant was collected from each pot at harvesting stage after 123 days from the date of sowing for estimation of seed weight. Seeds were analysed in the SRDI laboratory for estimation of nutrient uptake and protein content. Data on different plant parameters was statistically analyzed by using ANOVA and DMRT as outlined by Gomez and Gomez (1984).

Achievement/Findings:

From this study, it is concluded that K has positive effect on yield, protein content and nutrient uptake of soybean . Application of K up to 9.38 kg/ha which was 25 % higher over BARC recommended rate (7 .50 kg/ha)] produced the highest yield, protein content and nutrient uptake of soybean as compared to other treatments including the control. So, application of K should be increased 25% higher over BARC recommended rate for better yield, protein content and nutrient uptake of soybean.
