Effect of Cowdung and Chemical Fertilizers on the Growth of Acacia Mangium Seedlings

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Growth response of Acacia mangium seedlings to cowdung and NPK fertilizers was studied in Bangladesh Forest Research Institute, Chittagong. Use of cowdung and chemical fertilizers either individually or combined caused significant increase in seedlings height and biomass production. Application of cowdung alone in soil and soil - cowdung mixture at 3:1 ratio showed best performance to enhance both height increment and biomass production. The height growth and biomass production of A. mangium seedling ranked second when soil - cowding mixture at the rate of 5:1 ratio was applied in combination with NP each at 60 ppm level. Chemical fertilizer alone showed less effect on the growth of the seedlings.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of cowdung and chemical fertilizers on the growth of Acacia mangium seedlings

Methodology:

Acacia mangium seeds were sown in 23 x 15 cm polythene containers. We treated the seeds with hot water before sowing. The soil used in the polybags was sandy loam and acidic (pH 5.8) containing 0.04% nitrogen and 7 ppm phosphate. For only cowdung as soil - cowdung admixture and cowdung in combination with chemical fertilizers the following treatments were applied:

T₀ = No fertilizer (control)

T₁ = Soil - cowdung at 3:1

T₂ = Soil - cowdung at 4:1

T₃ = Soil - cowdung at 4:1+ N₂₀P₂₀ (ppm)

T₄ = Soil - cowdung at 5:1

T₅ = Soil - cowdung at 5:1+ N₆0P₆₀ (ppm)

For chemical fertilizers the following treatment were used (ppm)

T₀ = No fertilizer (control)

T₁ = N₂₀P₂₀

T₂ = N₂₀K₂₀

T₃ = N₆₀P₆₀

T₄ = N₆₀K60

T₅ = N₂₀P₂₀K₂₀

T₆ = N₆₀P₆₀K₆₀

The experiment was laid out in Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications each containing 20 seedlings

Achievement/Findings:

Beneficial use of cowdung for improving growth of leguminous tree seedling is in agreement with the works of different authors (Das 1984, RAPA 1987). Growth response of A. mangium seedlings to different NPK combination were recorded. The maximum height (42.83 cm) and total green biomass weight (44.50 g) of the seedlings were attained by treatment T₃, weher the fertilizer was applied at 60 ppm level under two element (NP) combination. The T₄ and T₆ with similar dose (60 ppm), but of different combinations showed comparatively less response. Apparently, the lower doses (20 ppm level) of various nutrient combinations i. e. T₁, T₂ and T₅ were less effective to enhance the growth of A. mangium seedlings. High growth rates of fast growing trees demand greater nutrients. Though nitrogen is not included in the list of critical elements for fertilizing leguminous trees, but the combination made by NP and NPK combinations to the development of these seedlings are commonly recognized (NRC/NAP 1983, RAPA/FAO 1987, Miller 1987, Prasad and Rawat 1992).
