Production potential of red  tilapia, a mutant hybrid  of Oreochromts nilottcus X Oreochromis  mossambicus. under low-input management was  evaluated.  Each pond  was  stocked  with fingerlings of  red tilapla at a stocking  density  of 20.000/ha. Supplementary feed  consisting of  rice  bran (60%)  and  mustard oil cake (40%)  at the  rate of 4-6% of biomass was given  in  all  ponds. Besides these. three ponds were  treated with  cattle dung. urea and  triple superphosphate at the rates of 750  kg.   8 kg and 16kg/ha. respectively at fortnightly intervals while  the other three ponds were  kept  untreated. Fish biomass after  six  months of rearing increased to an  average of 4,255 kg/ha in first  three ponds. whereas it was  3,121 kg./ha In untreated ponds.

To assess the  production potential and economic viable of red tilapia in shallow pond.

The  study was  undertaken in six earthen ponds of 280 m2 each, with an average water depth of 90  cm at the  Fisheries Research Institute (FRI). Mymensingh, Bangladesh from  September 1991 to  February 1992. Two treatments each with   three replications i. e.  treatment one   (Td  with supplementary feed  accompanied by fertilization, and treatment two (T2) simply with  supplementary feed  were  tried. The  supplementary feed  was prepared of mustard oil take (40%).  rice bran (60%) and energy of 336.8 Kcal/ 100 g of feed. Prior to  set. the experiment, all  the ponds were made ready by dewatering a.nd removing the  predatory species and for age  fish  following the  application of lime at the  rate  of 250  kg/ha. Three days subsequent to the application of lime,  the ponds were  filled  with water and T1   ponds were  fertilized with  cattle dung at the  rate  of 750  kg/ha, while  T2   ponds were   not   fertilized. Five  days after fertilization both the  ponds were stocked with red   tilapia fingerlings (mean length 5.51 em  and mean weight 8.70 g) at the  rate of  20,000/ha. Supplementary feed in  the  form of wet  mash was  supplied to all  the  ponds daily  at the  rate of 4-6%  of biomass. In addition to these, cowdung, urea and triple superphosphate, were  added to only T1 ponds once  a fortnlight at the  rates of 750 kg, 8 kg and  16 kg/ha, respectively. Fish  samples were  netted from  the ponds at monthly intervals and their length and weight were  measured to estimate biomass. Dissolved oxygen, pH  and water temperature were  measured at weekly intervals. Water temperature-during the  study period ranged from  18-30°C, while dissolved oxygen  was 1.5-4.4 ppm and  pH 7.5-8.7. Two  months after the stocking of  fish,  unwanted  fry/fingerlings produced by the  growers were removed as much as possible at two weeks interval with a  fine  mesh seive net to reasonably reduce the level  of competition and  kept  more or less equilibrium in the stocking density of grower  fish  in each  pond.  All the  ponds were completely harvested after six months rearing,  first by netting   and later  by draining the pond.

The  results of the  present study indicated that high  production of red tilapia is possible in  six   months of rearing, using agricultural  by products as feeds. Further, the  study has shown that  fertilization of ponds in  addition to  supplementary feeding resulted in  higher mean weight and  total fish   production. Operational cost involved are  the  cost of the pond preparation, the  purchase of fingerlings, feed and  fertilizers. Cost of labour has not been included. as it is expected that this small scale operation can be  handled by  farmers/family members themselves. The production cost in T1 when ponds were  fertilized in addition to the  use of supplementary feeds was Tk. 74,368.00 as compared to Tk.  55,  354.00 in T2. The  net income estimated was Tk. 95,832.00/ha/6 months in the case of fertilized ponds with supplementary feed while  the  net  income was Tk. 69.486.00/ha/6 months from  ponds with  supplementary feeding alone. The economic analysis  indicated  that  additional  benefit of Tk. 26, 346.00/ha/6  months could be  obtained through fertilization of pond at an  additional cost of Tk. 19,014.00. This shows that the  use of fertilizers in  addition to supplementary feed  is not  an economic way  of increasing benefits. Therefore, it  has been concluded from   this experiment that farming of red tilapia under semi-intensive system is highly profitable and suitable for Bangladesh conditions.
