Investigation on Dalbergia sissoo was carried out during 2008-09 and 2009-10 at different severely affected sites of Chittagong (Anwara, Chandanaish, Potia & Satkania), Chuadanga (Jibonnagar), Comilla (Sadar, Sadar Dakkhin & Burichang), Kustia (Daulotpur), Meherpur (Sadar & Gangni), and Tangail (Bhuapur, Delduar, Kalihati, Mirzapur & Sadar) districts of Bangladesh. The study sites included mostly strip plantations of Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED), participatory approached strip plantations of Forest Department (FD) and private stakeholders. During pre-& post-monsoon and drought period, soil and root samples were collected from the different sites. Soil parameters like soil texture, pH, organic matter and bulk density were analyzed and fungal strains, mites and bacteria were isolated to investigate the problem. Correlation of sissoo mortality with soil’s characteristics along with identified Fusarium solani was made to assess the sissoo mortality. Findings support to infer that pathogenic affect might happen at any age growth stage of sissoo. It is assumed that fine textured soil and root interference enhances pathogenic attack. Over all, finding support to conclude that moisture stress period as well as temperature supports F. solani activities and mortality symptoms expressed prominently.

1.To find out the effect of soil properties on the pathogenicity of Fusarium solani causing wilting of sissoo in selected sites

2.To determine correlation of soil properties with wilting of sissoo caused by F. solani

Wilting of sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo), a serious problem mostly reported in the northern and south western part and in the strip plantations throughout the Bangladesh.  On priority basis the study areas were selected during 2008-09 which exist in Chittagong (Anwara, Chandanaish, Potia & Satkania), Chuadanga (Jibonnagar), Comilla (Sadar, Sadar Dakkhin & Burichang), Kustia (Daulotpur), Meherpur (Sadar & Gangni), and Tangail (Bhuapur, Delduar, Kalihati, Mirzapur & Sadar) district. Strip plantations mostly belong to the participatory management of Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) was also included in the study. Study considered different degree of severity of trees in affected sites.  Effect of seasonal variation, viz. pre and post monsoon and drought period on sissoo mortality was assessed. A few woodlots or small patches of sissoo of private stakeholders were brought under study. Soils are anthropogenic in the sites. Age of sissoo, growth and site conditions were observed. Root samples of affected and healthy tress were collected, isolated and identified by the Agar Plant Test/Method for fungal association. Standard methods were followed for collecting and analysis of data.

The number of trees observed for investigation varies at different sites due to uneven population size. High intensity of affected trees was found in all the sites under investigation where it varies from 72 to 99% except Anwara site with about 42%. More than 90% affected trees were observed at Comilla Sadar, Gangni, Daulotpur, Meherpur Sadar, Delduar, Mirzapur and Bhuapur. Out of the total, more than 30% severely affected trees was observed at Delduar, Mirzapur and Daulotpur. Mortality rate of sissoo was found high at Meherpur Sadar (35%) and low at Anwara (5%). It was also observed that the sissoo trees planted in flat land above flood water inundation i.e. medium high land shows less mortality rate. Some important soil characteristics like moisture content, soil reaction, texture, bulk density and organic matter contents at different locations were assessed. The soil pH range showed a particular trend in the upper and lower depths that indicates leaching of cations. Moisture content was found higher in lower depths in all sites. In general, the soils under study have low soil organic matter (SOM) content. The poorness in organic matter may be due to removal of leaf litter from the road side. The bulk density of the soils shows higher values in the lower depth which is seemingly related to the increased compactness of the soils. Soil texture is mostly loamy which is suitable for sissoo cultivation. Root samples collected during pre and post monsoon as well as drought period were analyzed for identification of pathogens. Number of colony was found to be highest in February i. e. in the drought period of the year. At that time count of F. solani found highest in all the sites under study. During this period moisture content was lower than that of pre and post monsoon. Due to moisture stress, leaf fall occur at that period and oozing intensity was increased. Oozes materials dried up during May. Mites and beetle was found under bark, the stem boring by beetle through the oozing spot was found in severely affected and dead trees. Over all, findings support to conclude that moisture stress period as well as temperature supports F. solani activities and mortality symptoms expressed prominently.
