Use of Multimedia Messaging Service System in Crop Disease Diagnosis

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to see the use of Mobile Multimedia Messaging Service in crop disease diagnosis. By a Nokia 2700 Classic mobile phone, photographs of infected crops leaves were taken from Comilla areas and were sent to Dhaka in another mobile having multimedia system. A total of 50 photographs were sent through the mobile phone for suggestion. About 60% of the photographs view were fully clear and easily identified, 23% of the photographs were near clear but found slight difficult to identify, 15% of the photographs view were not so clear and was difficult to recognize and 3% of the photographs could not be identified and having problems in receiving. This paper shows an innovative channel for farmers who can send their infected crop’s MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) clip to agricultural research institute to get a quick feedback and proper treatment.

Objectives:

1. To see the viability of the technique in practical field and tried to find out whether it is possibility to use this system in agricultural sectors.

Methodology:

MMS diagnosis system is an integration of existing MMS technology with Mail Server, Mail Parsing Technology, MMSC (Multimedia Messaging Service Centre) and Web Server. All those things are integrated in a way that they work as a complete system. The experiment was conducted by using two mobile phones having the capability of sending multimedia messages. In the experiment a Nokia 2700 and a Nokia 5130c mobile phone sets were used. The photographs were taken from Comilla and were sent to Dhaka. A total of two hundred photographs were taken from different agricultural lands in Comilla. The photographs taken by the Nokia 5130c mobile phone set were sent to another mobile phone set (Nokia 2700 classic set) and the quality of the photographs were observed. The quality of the photographs here mainly refers the clearness of the snaps, color contrast, zooming capability etc.

Achievement/Findings:

In this paper, we focused the potential scope of Mobile Phone MMS as a feasible solution to the farmers who are facing problems with their crop’s diseases staying in rural areas in Bangladesh. A large amount of our total GDP is dependent on crop. But still around 25 percent annual crops are lost due to plant diseases. So this sector deserves more attention for tomorrow’s food independent Bangladesh.
