A total of 105 soil samples (at BINA farm, 55 composite samples from 11 profiles and at Barabilarpar, 50 composite samples from 10 profiles) were collected to characterize the changes in soil characters for the assessment of whether the land have undergone any degradation during the period between 1977 and 2009. During 2009, the surface soil texture of BINA farm soils were loamy to sandy loam and Barabilarpar soils were clay to silty clay loam and the soils were moderately acidic to nearly neutral in reaction. Organic carbon and total nitrogen contents ranged from 0.40 to 1.72% and 0.042 to 0.127% in BINA farm soils and from 0.96 to 1.68% and 0.07 to 0.182% in Barabilarpar soils, respectively. Available phosphorus and available sulfur contents varied from 6.76 to 21.32 ppm and 8.12 to 27.22 ppm in the BINA farm soils and from 6.02-11.98 ppm and 4.77-12.92 ppm in the Barabilarpar soils, respectively. Exchangeable calcium, potassium and sodium contents in BINA farm soils ranged from 0.8 to 1.66, 0.07 to 0.16 and 0.08 to 0.14 me% and in Barabilarpar soils from 0.8 to 1.98, 0.08 to 0.24 and 0.11 to 0.20 me%, respectively. Changes in particle size distribution of the surface soils of BINA-farm and Barabilarpar showed a decrease in clay and silt contents in the favour of sand contents between 1977 and 2009. Changes in pH values showed a decline in both of the locations. Organic carbon and total N contents showed an increase of 49 and 78%, and 58 and 160%, respectively. Available phosphorus contents increased 42 and 16% in the 0-15cm and 15-30cm layers of BINA-farm and decreased until 60cm layers in Barabilarpar soils. Changes in the exchangeable cation (Ca, K and Na) contents showed a decrease in the studied soils except some rear increase in few lower horizons at both the BINA farm and Barabilarpar soils during the period between 1977 and 2009.

1. To evaluate location-specific changes in soil characters over time for the assessment of land degradation situation in Bangladesh.

BINA farm, 55 composite samples from 11 profiles and at Barabilarpar, 50 composite samples from 10 profiles) of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain Soils (AEZ-9) were collected for this study. The representative soil series were identified with the help of Soil Resources Development Institute (SRDI). The soil samples were collected on a profile basis from each location and taken to the laboratory for physical and chemical analysis. The soils were then dried at room temperature, processed and passed through 10 mm sieve and stored for analysis. The soil samples have been analyzed following standard methods, viz.: particle size distribution by a hydrometer and soil pH by glass electrode pH meter, organic carbon by wet Oxidation and total nitrogen by micro-Kjeldahl method, available phosphorus and available sulfur were extracted from the soil by dilute acid solutions and exchangeable cation e.g. Ca, K and Na were determined by ammonium acetate extraction method.

The soils of BINA farm and Barabilarpar represented the changes in the intensity of various actions of different processes under the tropical environment and the intensification of the overwhelming human activities. The findings of this study revealed that the natural and human activities played important roles in the location-specific changes in soil texture (sand, silt and clay), pH, and contents of organic carbon, total N, available phosphorus, available sulfur and exchangeable cations (Ca, K and Na) of BINA farm and Barabilarpar during the period between 1977 and 2009. This study suggested the importance of existing soil management processes for the maintenance of soil fertility for sustainable crop production.
