Environmental Awareness Among Higher Secondary Level Students: a Study in Tangail District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main purpose of the study was to settle on the extent of environmental awareness of higher secondary students. One hundred and ten students were selected through the purposive sampling technique from five higher secondary schools of Tangail district, Bangladesh. Among the selected students there ware 63 girls and 47 boys. The students were asked questions to evaluate their understanding of environment, environmental issues, their opinion to solve the different environmental problems etc. The findings revealed that, majority of the students have general concept about environment (62.7%), pollution (70.6%) and household waste management (64.5%) which is good and they have average idea about arsenic, acid rain, green house gases, global warming and climate change. Age, sex, study group, religion and family member had no effects on environmental awareness.

Objectives:

1. To determine the status of environmental awareness of the higher secondary level students and to observe the scenario of the relationship with their different particulars and environmental awareness.

Methodology:

The present study is an attempt to examine the environmental awareness of higher secondary level students in relation to age, sex and educational group. A sample of 110 higher secondary level students (47 boys and 63 girls) was selected from five different colleges (Major General Mahamodul Hasan College, Sheikh Fozilatunnesa Mujib Mohila College, Kumudini Govt. College, Mawlana Mohammod Ali College and Islamic University of Technical College) from Tangail District, Bangladesh. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the sample. The data were collected through close ended questionnaires constituting 31 questions (e.g. define environment, pollution, green house gases, climate change etc). Information was collected during the first July to July 15, 2010. The statistical measures such as number and percent distribution were used for describing the variables of the study. The analysis was performed by using statistical treatment with SPSS computer package.

Achievement/Findings:

The main findings of the present study showed that the extent of general concept of environmental awareness of higher secondary students about environment, pollution and household waste management was good though they had average idea about arsenic, acid rain, green houses gases, global warming, climate etc. Majority of the student never participated in any environmental program and male are more interested to participate in environmental program than that of female. A large number of students suggest that the tree plantation activities are necessary to improve the quality of environment. Boy and girl students in this study have nearly the same environmental awareness.
