Effect of Sulphur and Boron on the Yield Performance of Mustard (bari Sarisha 14)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Jamalpur, during 2008-09 and 2009-10 to find out suitable combination of Sulfur and Boron fertilizers for maximizing the yield of mustard (BARI sarisha-14). Sixteen combinations T₁=S₀ B₀ T₂=S₀ B₁, T₃=S₀ B₂, T₄=S₀ B₃, T₅=S₁₅ B₀, T₆=S₃₀ B₀, T₇=S₄₅B₀, T₈=S₁₅ B₁, T₉=S₁₅ B₃ , T₁₀=S₃₀ B₁, T₁₁=S₄₅ B₁, T₁₂=S₄₅B₃, T₁₃=S₁₅ B₂, T₁₄=S₃₀ B₃, T₁₅=S₄₅ B₂ and T₁₆=S₃₀ B₂ of Sulfur and Boron fertilizers were used in the experiment. A randomized complete block design was followed for the experiment. Mustard variety BARRI sharisa-14 was used as the test crop. From the results of the experiment, it was found that treatment T₁₆= S₃₀ B₂ gave the highest yield in the both year (1535 kg/ha and 1650 kg/ha) with the highest BCR (3.29 and 3.62) and lowest yield (830 kg/ha and 963 kg/ha) was found in control treatment T₁=S₀ B₀ in both the year.

Objectives:

1. To find out suitable combination of Sulfur and Boron fertilizers for maximizing the yield of mustard (BARI sarisha-14).

Methodology:

The Experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Jamalpur during the season from November 10, 2008 to February 02, 2009 and. November 10, 2009 to February 02, 2010. The initial soil samples collected from a depth of 0-15 cm were analyzed by ASI method and the properties are presented. The unit plot size was 3 m X 4 m. The spacing maintained for Mustard entries was 30 cm row to row and 10 cm seed to seed distances. The treatments comprising of T₁=S₀B_0, T₂=S₀B₁, T₃=S₀B₂, T₄=S₀B₃, T₅=S₁₅B₀, T₆=S₃₀B₀, T₇=S₄₅B₀, T₈=S₁₅B₁, T₉=S₁₅B₃,, T₁₀=S₃₀B₁, T₁₁=S₄₅B₁, T₁₂=S₄₅B₃, T₁₃=S₁₅B₂, T₁₄=S₃₀B₃, T₁₅= S₄₅B₂ and T₁₆=S₃₀B₂ were the experiment was laid out in a following randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications.. Fertilizers were applied at 280-175-95-170-6-12 kg/ha of urea, triple supper phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, zinc sulphate and borax respectively, as recommended for Bangladesh. One half amount of urea and full dose of all other fertilizers were incorporated into the soil at the time of final land preparation. Other half of urea was applied as top dressing after 30 days sowing (flowering stage) was done. During land preparation, cow-dung was applied at 10 ton/ha. The mustard variety BARI Sarisha-14 were sown in 10 November, 2008, 2009. Different intercultural operations such as pest and disease management, irrigation, earthing up, weeding and mulching, etc. were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested on 02-02-2009 and 2010. Data on plant height, No.of branches/plant, No. of seeds/plant, 1000 seed weight, and yield/ha were recorded from randomly selected 10 plants of each treatment. The Recorded data were compiled and analyzed statistically and means were separated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT), to find out the difference among the treatments. Benefit cost ratios (BCR) of different treatments were also calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

From the two year study, it was found that S₃₀B₂ kg/ha with the blanked dose of N₇₀P₂₅K₆₀Mg₅Zn₂ kg/ha is the suitable combination for higher yield of BARI sarisha-14 and profitable for economic production.
