Effect of Sowing Time on the Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Sesame Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the field of the Chadpasha under Regional Agricultural Research station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Rahmatpur, Barisal during kharif seasons of 2008 and 2009 to find out the optimum sowing time on the yield and yield contributing characters of some advance line of sesame. The experiment was conducted in 5m x 4m size plots in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replication. There were four sowing time viz., March- 02, March-11, March-21 and March-31 four advance lines and one cheek variety. Among the treatments the highest seed yield (1366 kg/ha) was found at first sowing time of March-02. The highest seed yield (1374 kg/ha) was found in Ses-05178. The results also showed that the sesame genotype of Ses-05178 coupled with March-02 sowing gave the highest seed yield (1374 kg/ha).

Objectives:

1. To find out the optimum sowing time on the yield and yield contributing characters of some advance line of sesame.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the field of the Chadpasha under Regional Agricultural Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Rahmatpur, Barisal during kharif seasons of 2008 and 2009. It was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 6 m X 5 m. The seeds were sown at a spacing of 30 cm x 10 cm .The treatment of the experiment were four dates of planting viz., D₁ = March 02, D₂ = March 11, D₃ = March 21 and D₄ = March 31 and four advance lines of sesame viz., V₁= Ses- 05178, V₂= Ses-701, V₃= Ses-05115 and V₄= Ses-05163 and along with a check variety BARI til-2 were used. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 50:28:23:20:1.8:1.8 NPKSZn B kg/ha respectively. Half of N (as urea) and all others fertilizers were applied during final land preparation and the rest of half N was applied at 30 DAE. Weeding cum thinning, irrigation, insect and disease control were done as and when necessary as per recommendation. At maturity 10 randomly selected plants were uprooted for data collection. Recorded date were analyzed in the computer package programmee MSTAT-C for Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) and mean value were separated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

From the result of the experiment, it may be concluded that genotype Ses-05178, Ses-701 and Ses-05163 are found better yielder when sown in 2nd March but these later genotypes can also be grown up to 11 March to get reasonable better yield.
