Stem and Fruit Characters of Some Eggplant Varieties Influencing the Infestation Rate of Eggplant Shoot and Fruit Borer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted with sixteen eggplant varieties at Plant Pathology Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh to identify their morphological characteristics for the resistance against eggplant shoot and fruit borer (Leucinodes orbonalis) infestation. The stem and fruit characters of eggplant showed significant relationship among the tested varieties. The highest number (11.38) of branch per plant was found in the variety Menter and the lowest (4.56) was found in the variety Thamba. The number of fruit was highest (3.44) in the wild variety and the lowest (14.63) was recorded in the variety Kata begun. Correlation values revealed that the shoot and fruit infestation increased with the increase of number of branch plant^-1and shoot and fruit infestation decreased with the increase of plant height, stem diameter and number of fruit plant^-1. The relationship between fruit infestation and number of branch was significant.

Objectives:

1. To identify their morphological characteristics for the resistance against eggplant shoot and fruit borer (Leucinodes orbonalis) infestation.

Methodology:

Sixteen eggplant varieties (Singnath, Borka, Kaikka-G, Dohazari-G, Chega, Menter, Bholanath, Jessore-L, Ishurdi WS, Laffa-BAU, Thamba, Marichbegun-S, Katabegun-WS, ISD-006, China oblong and Wild) were screened for eggplant shoot and fruit borer resistance. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications for each. The experimental field was divided into three blocks and each block consisted of sixteen lines. The treatments were randomly assigned to the blocks. For the determination of morphological characters influencing the infestation rate of eggplant shoot and fruit borer, sixteen varieties were grown during rabi season. No insecticidal control measure was taken. Five plants from each plot were selected at random and observations were made to record data. The height of the plants was measured from the ground level to the top of the plant by a meter scale. Stem diameter was recorded by a Verneer Scale in cm from the ground level. The number of branches was counted at 40, 70, 100 and 120 day after transplanting (DAT). The average number of fruits plant-1 was also recorded. Statistical analysis was done by using Computer Program MSTAT-C and mean differences were adjusted with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). To determine the extent of interaction between eggplant shoot and fruit borer infestation and eggplant plant characters, correlation matrix for all possible data combinations was worked out by the standard method. Correlation coefficient was further partitioned into characters of direct and indirect effects by path coefficient analysis taking all the characters into consideration. Eggplant shoot and fruit borer infestation was considered resultant variable.

Achievement/Findings:

Fruit infestation increase with the increase of number of branch plant^-1 and number of leaves plant^-1 and decreased with the increase of plant height, stem diameter and number of fruit plant^-1.
