Management Practices with Botanical and Chemical Control of Hairy Caterpillar of Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at the field of the Regional Agricultural Research station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Rahmatpur, Barisal, during the month of January to May of 2008 and 2009. To save the crop, it is necessary to control the insect adopting different controlling measures. However, with a view to control hairy catterpillar of mungbean, the present experiment including several botanical/ insecticides was designed. Efficacy of different botanical and chemicals practices namely zet powder, neem kernel extract, neem oil and one chemical insecticide Nipcord 10EC and their integration was designed against hairy catterpillar of mungbean under natural field condition. In the result, it was found that the highest hairy catterpillar was 40 per plant observed in the last week of March in 2008 and march 2009. Among the treatments as expected Nogos 100EC reduced the highest Hairy catterpillar (99.05%) with the highest BCR (5.02) followed by Neemkernel extract(2.5%) + Biskatali dust extract (37.04%), Neem kernel extract + Zet powder (24.73%) and Neem oil + Zet powder (21.79%) and Zet powder (20.83%) recorded at 15 days after spray over the pre-treatment count. Neemkernel extract (2.5%) + Biskatali dust extract gave the second highest BCR (4.85) followed by Neem kernel extract + Zetpowder (3.95), Neem oil +Zet powder (3.74) and Zetpowder (3.64).

Objectives:

1. To find out the most effective plant materials with their integration for the management of hairy catterpillar of mungbean.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the field of the Regional Agricultural Research station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Rahmatpur, Barisal during the month of January to May of 2008 and 2009. The experiment was laid out in a well-prepared land, following randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 4m X 3m. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 45: 100: 58 Urea TSP: MP kg/ha respectively as recommended for Bangladesh. All fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. During land preparation, cowdung was applied at 10 ton/ha. The variety used was BARI mung-6. Seeds of mungbean variety BARI mung-6 were sown on 2nd week of January, 2008 and 2009. The spacing maintained for mungbean was 30 cm row to row and 10 cm seed to seed distances. Intercultural operations, such as irrigation was given twice, weeding and mulching were done as and when as necessary. Six treatments namely, Zet powder @5g/l, Neem kernal extract(2.5%) + Biskatali dust extract, neem kernal extract+ Zet powder, Neem oil 5ml/l +Zet powder, Nogos 100EC @ 1ml/l and untreated control were evaluated against hairy catterpillar of mungbean under field condition. Three hundred fifty gram (350g) neem seed kernal and five hundred grams (500g) biskatali dust were crushed and added to 10 litre of water and kept over night and sieved with fine net. Then the solution was ready for spray. Four gram (4g) detergent powder (Zet powder) added to 1 litre of water stirring and sieved with fine net. Four (4) ml neem oil added to 1 litre of water with 4 g zet powder stirring and sieved then the solution was ready for spray. Botanicals and insecticide were applied on February 20, 2008, 2009 at the vegetative and pod formation stage of the crop with the help of knapsack sprayer. Randomly 10 plants were selected per plot for counting hairy catterpillar of mungbean. Larvae of the hairy catterpillar were counted bellow the leaf,shoot and pod of the plant before 5, 10 and 15 days after spray in all the treatments The crop was harvested on 20-04-08, 09. Seed yield of different treatments were recorded. Recorded data were compiled and analyzed in the computer package programmee MSTAT-C for Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) and mean value were separated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Benefit cost ratios (BCR) of different treatments were also calculated.
