An experiment was conducted to compare radiation environment (solar radiation absorption, interception, penetration and albedo) between E-W and N-S row orientations of soybean (Glycine max L.) population grown at the field laboratory of the Department of Environmental Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh (Latitude 24.750N and Longitude 90.500E) during the period from December 2003 to May 2004. Absorption of solar radiation was higher in E-W soybean canopy than that of N-S rows. Interception of solar radiation increases in both the canopy day by day with the increase of canopy structure and LAIs and it was always higher in E-W orientation than that of N-S orientation. In case of penetration of solar radiation the NS row showed the maximum value. The albedo observed over soybean canopy was larger in E-W rows as compared to N-S rows. A higher harvest index (HI) was found in E-W orientation. The yield of soybean was highly influenced by the different row orientations. E-W row orientations significantly increased the yield per hectare (3.64 ton) than that of N-S orientation (3.12 ton) due to higher harvesting of the solar radiation by the canopy of E-W orientations.

1. To comparing radiation environment (solar radiation absorption, interception, penetration and albedo) between E-W and N-S row orientations of soybean (Glycine max L.) population grown at the Latitude 24.750N and Longitude 90.500E.

The experiment was carried out at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Environmental Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 2003 to April 2004. Soybean variety “Shohag” (PV-1) was grown on flat land. Area of each plot was 10 m ×10 m. Seeds of soybean were planted in a pit at a spacing of 10 cm × 50 cm on 1, January. East-West (E-W) and North-South (N-S) row orientations were followed. Solar radiation over and below the crop canopy (at soil surface) was measured with Pyranometers (K 91025 Japan; K91026 Japan and K92016 Japan) Pyranometer- K91025 was placed in between two rows of N-S orientation, Pyranometer-K91026 in E-W orientation and Pyranometer- K92016 was placed above the canopy to measure the global solar radiation. These locations were carefully selected to measure averaged penetration of solar radiation below the canopy.Percent interception and penetration of solar radiation by the canopy at various plant growth stages was also calculated. The Pyranometer- K92016 was set inversely at 1.2 m height to calculate albedo (reflected solar radiation) over the canopy. The positions of the Pyranometers were checked very carefully to avoid any instrumental errors and they were calibrated with their standard one before setting on the field. Plant height and canopy width were measured at a regular intervals of 10 days starting from 62 DAS. Leaf area was measured with a digital leaf area meter in BAU Central Laboratory to calculate leaf area index (LAI). The data received at 10 second intervals from the sensors on different micrometeorological parameters from the experimental site were primarily collected by CR10X Datalogger (Campbell Scientifics, USA). Then the output data from the Datalogger at 15 min average were stored in a storage module (SM4M, Campbell Scientifics, USA). The experimental raw data at 15 min intervals were retrieved from the storage module periodically for further averaging and mathematical interpolation. After obtaining 15 minutes average raw data from the field, these were then averaged again for 30 minutes intervals by using the MACROS program in Microsoft Excel. Solar radiation interception and percent of radiation interception were calculated.

The present research result shows the better performance for larger solar radiation harvest by the East-West row orientations than that of North-South soybean rows. Absorption of solar radiation was higher in E-W soybean canopy than that of N-S one because of the more favorable position of the sun to absorb maximum solar radiation by the E-W soybean canopy in the latitude of Bangladesh (24°N).
